Betty Shelby Got Away With Murder

Even though we have seen the video of how the killing of 40-year-old, unarmed, African American, Terence Crutcher unfolded, white Tulsa police officer Betty Jo Shelby was acquitted by a jury.

During the testimony, officer Shelby defended herself by saying that she shot Crutcher because he didn’t obey her command to lie on the ground and then reached inside his SUV for what she presumed was a gun.

The widely circulated video of the shooting tells a different story. Terence Crutcher – who as we now know was under the influence of drugs at the time – had both hands raised and was never threatening.

Officer Shelby was acquitted because, in the words of her defense attorney, “she just overreacted”.

In response to the acquittal, Rev. Joey Crutcher, Terence’s father said: “Let it be known that I believe in my heart that Betty Shelby got away with murder.” Protesters took to the streets and chanted “Hands up, don’t shoot.” in front of the hotel where Shelby was staying. The crowd eventually disbursed, peacefully.

The killing of Terence Crutcher is one of several killings of unarmed African American men by police officers recently which inspired the revival of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Killer Cop Betty Shelby Charged In The Killing Of Unarmed African American Man

Photo provided by the Tulsa Oklahoma Police Department

Following the police killing of unarmed African American man, Terence Crutcher protests were held in Tulsa, OK and other cities demanding justice for the victim and his family. On Thursday 09/22/16, Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler announced first degree manslaughter charges against Tulsa Police officer Betty Shelby in the death of Terence Crutcher.

Anything L.A. Magazine believes that EVERY life is sacred, but it’s impossible not to notice that the people killed by police officers are predominantly unarmed African American men. There is something VERY wrong if and when police officers feel ENTITLED to kill a man whose car has stalled on a highway because he didn’t drop to the ground at the command of an approaching police officer. Any stranded motorist’s assumption would be that the police arrived to help, not to order him to the ground, taser and kill him.

Anything L.A. Magazine supports the Police Department. It doesn’t support crime, no matter who the perpetrator is. Terence Crutcher was a son, a brother, a husband, a father of four and a college student. He had his hands in the air. He was unarmed and wasn’t threatening the officers or anyone else for that matter. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALIVE TODAY.

Thanks to a video that showed the complete exchange between the police and Terence Crutcher, Tulsa Police officer Betty Shelby has been charged in his death.

Parallel to the killing of Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, OK massive unrests rocked Charlotte, N. Carolina following the killing of yet another African American man, Keith Lamont Scott by police officers. (The killing took place on the parking lot of the apartment building where the man lived with his family.) According to his wife Rakeyia Scott, who witnessed the killing and appealed to the police not to shoot him, Keith Lamont Scott didn’t provoke the officers’ actions and was unarmed. (Scott was partially disabled having sustained serious injuries in a near-death motorcycle accident last year.)

The protesters in Charlotte demanded the police release their video of the accident. Several days later, the Police Department released some footage which doesn’t conclusively show whether Keith Lamont Scott was unarmed as his wife said, or armed as the police claims. So far no charges have been filed against any of the officers involved in the shooting.
