Jimmy Kimmel Will Host The 89th Oscars®

JIMMY KIMMEL TALKS OSCARS® HOST GIG ON “JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!” To Host Live Global Event on Oscar® Sunday, February 26 on ABC

Late-night talk show host, producer and comedian Jimmy Kimmel confirmed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” that he will host the 89th Oscars® to be broadcast live on Oscar® Sunday, February 26, 2017, on the ABC Television Network. This is Kimmel’s first time hosting the global telecast.

“Mike and Jennifer have an excellent plan and their enthusiasm is infectious,” said Kimmel. “I am honored to have been chosen to host the 89th and final Oscars.”

“Jimmy’s ability to connect with people is what makes him a singular choice for this job,” said producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd. “His frank observations, relatable persona, wry humor and love of all kinds of film make him a natural fit for the Oscars stage.”

“Jimmy has the qualities of all the great hosts,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “He knows who he is, he knows the audience and he knows how to captain a ship with many moving parts. We’re thrilled he has agreed to host our show.”

Kimmel serves as host and executive producer of the Emmy®-winning “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” ABC’s longest running late-night talk show. Now in its 14th season, “JKL” has earned six Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Variety Series Talk category, the Writing for a Variety Series category, and the Variety, Music or Comedy Series category.

The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

10 CONTENDERS REMAIN IN VFX OSCAR® RACE

10 Films In The Running For Visual Effects Oscar 2014

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 films remain in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 87th Oscars®.

10 Films In The Running For Visual Effects Oscar 2014 are listed below in alphabetical order:

The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the shortlist. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will now be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films on Saturday, January 10th 2015. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

The 87th Academy Awards® nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 15th 2015, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

Academy Nicholl Fellowships Live Read

Actors Clancy Brown, Ansel Elgort, Jack O’Connell and Tessa Thompson will perform a live reading of selected scenes from the four winning scripts at the 2014 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting Awards Presentation & Live Read on Thursday, November 13, at 7:30 p.m., at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. For the second consecutive year, the event will be directed and produced by Rodrigo Garcia and Julie Lynn, respectively, whose credits include “Albert Nobbs,” “Mother and Child” and the upcoming “Last Days in the Desert.”

Multitalented performer Clancy Brown has appeared in such feature films as “Cowboys & Aliens,” “Starship Troopers,” “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Highlander.” An accomplished voice actor, Brown has lent his talents to several television series, including “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” as well as such video games as “Call of Duty: Black Ops II.”

Ansel Elgort can currently be seen in Jason Reitman’s latest feature, “Men, Women & Children.” He also starred in this past summer’s “The Fault in Our Stars” opposite Shailene Woodley. In his next film, Elgort reprises the role of Caleb in “Insurgent,” the sequel to “Divergent.”

Jack O’Connell recently appeared in the prison drama “Starred Up” for which he was nominated for a BAFTA Scotland Award and a British Independent Film Award. His other feature film credits include “’71,” for which he was nominated for a British Independent Film Award, and “300: Rise of an Empire.” He also starred in the television series “Skins.” O’Connell will next be seen as Louis “Louie” Zamperini in Universal Pictures’ epic drama “Unbroken,” directed by Angelina Jolie, which is set for a December 25 release.

Tessa Thompson currently appears in the Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions feature “Dear White People” for which she was nominated for Breakthrough Actor for the Gotham Awards. Up next she portrays civil rights leader Diane Nash in the Paramount Pictures film “Selma,” opening in December. Her credits include “For Colored Girls” and the BBC’s “Copper.”

Presenters for the evening’s program include filmmaker and 2010 Nicholl fellow Destin Cretton (“Short Term 12”), filmmaker Ava DuVernay (“Selma”), Academy Award®-winning actress Eva Marie Saint (“On the Waterfront”), and screenwriter Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith (“Legally Blonde”).

Three individual writers and one writing team have been selected as winners of the 2014 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition out of a record 7,511 entries.

THE MARY PICKFORD CELEBRATION OF SILENT FILM
THE COSTUME OF SILENT DRAMA: MARY PICKFORD AND LITTLE ANNIE ROONEY
The Academy and the Mary Pickford Foundation will continue their annual celebration of silent film with the restoration world premiere of “Little Annie Rooney” (1925) on November 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bing Theater. Film historian and author Jeffrey Vance and Academy Film Archive Director Michael Pogorzelski will discuss the restoration of the silent classic. The screening is presented in conjunction with Hollywood Costume, which includes the costume that Mary Pickford wore in the title role.
Those who purchase tickets to “Little Annie Rooney” may view the exhibition free of charge immediately before the screening, from 5 to 7 p.m.

THE COSTUME OF SILENT COMEDY: CHARLIE CHAPLIN AND THE TRAMP RESTORED
Fascinating stories, behind-the-scenes footage, never-before-exhibited documents and the earliest filmed images of Charlie Chaplin’s “Little Tramp” character will all be part of a unique presentation hosted by film historian and preservationist Serge Bromberg on November 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bing Theater. The evening includes screenings of two Chaplin shorts: “A Night in the Show”(1915) from a new print, and “The Bank”(1915), from a new restoration making its theatrical world premiere. Chaplin’s ensemble from “The Tramp” is currently on view in Hollywood Costume.

Winners Of 2014 Academy Nicholl FellowshipsThree individual writers and one writing team have been selected as winners of the 2014 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition. Each individual winner and the combined writing team will receive a $35,000 prize, the first installment of which will be distributed at an awards presentation on Thursday, November 13, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. For the second consecutive year, the event will also feature a live read of selected scenes from the fellows’ winning scripts by members of the Academy.

The Academy To Screen Festival Standout Whitey United States Of America V James J BulgerTHE ACADEMY TO SCREEN FESTIVAL STANDOUT
“WHITEY: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA V. JAMES J. BULGER”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will screen the documentary “Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger” on Monday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bing Theater in Los Angeles.  Director Joe Berlinger, who received an Oscar® nomination for the 2011 documentary “Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory,” will be in attendance for a conversation moderated by documentarian Ondi Timoner.
“Whitey” follows the 2013 trial of the notorious Boston mob boss James “Whitey” Bulger, the real-life inspiration for Jack Nicholson’s character in the 2006 Best Picture winner “The Departed.”  The documentary also sheds light on the families Bulger terrorized and the government corruption that sustained his criminal activity.  “Whitey” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and has since been screened at numerous festivals nationwide.

The Academy Present 100 Greatest Arab Films Of All TimeTHE ACADEMY PRESENTS TOP ARAB FILMS FROM DUBAI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL’S “100 GREATEST” LIST.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in partnership with the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), will present “Arab Cinema Classics,” a two-day screening series of the best in Arab film on Friday, June 13, and Saturday, June 21, at the Bing Theater in Los Angeles. With input from nearly 500 prominent film critics, writers, novelists, academics and other arts professionals, DIFF in 2013 compiled a tally of the 100 greatest Arab films of all time. The Academy will screen three selections from DIFF’s Top 10: “The Night of Counting the Years” (“Al-Mummia,” 1970) Friday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. Director Shadi Abdel Salam’s film is based on the true story of the Horabat tribe’s 1881 plundering of pharaohs’ tombs in the ancient city of Thebes.  Long unavailable for exhibition, the film was restored in 2009 by Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation. “Cairo Station” (“Bab el Hadid,” 1958) Friday, June 13, at 9:20 p.m.

Directed by the internationally renowned Egyptian auteur Youssef Chahine, the film takes place at Cairo’s main railroad station, commonly referred to as the Iron Gate, and offers a tense portrait of life at the margins of Egyptian society. “West Beirut” (“West Beyrouth,” 1998) Saturday, June 21, at 7:30 p.m. With special guest writer/director Ziad Doueiri. This directorial debut of Ziad Doueiri is set in the tumultuous spring of 1975, as the Lebanese Civil War unfolds.  Following the lives of two teenagers from the Muslim section of Beirut, the film blends the personal and the historical into a vibrant coming-of-age drama.

The screening series is part of the Academy’s International Outreach initiative, which brings together Academy members representing a range of cinematic crafts with filmmakers and film lovers from around the world. “The vibrancy of Arab cinema today owes much to the rich legacy and proud history of Arab filmmaking,” said Sid Ganis, chair of the International Outreach Committee.  “The Academy is pleased to embrace some of the region’s most influential films and artists through this Los Angeles presentation.”

The Academy Celebrate The 10th Anniversary Of Napoleon DynamiteTHE ACADEMY CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF “NAPOLEON DYNAMITE”
WITH LIVE COMMENTARY EVENT

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the indie comedy hit “Napoleon Dynamite” with writer-director Jared Hess and star Jon Heder participating in a live commentary screening and conversation on Monday, June 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bing Theatre on the LACMA campus. The event is the second in the Academy’s “Live Commentary!” series, inaugurated last year with a screening of “The Princess Bride” with Jason Reitman and Rob Reiner. The format, a live version of commentaries typically included on DVDs and other recorded media, opens the door to illuminating anecdotes, behind-the-scenes details and filmmaker insights in real time.

Internships Open Doors for New TalentThe deadline for the 2014-2015 grant cycle has passed. Please check back in September 2014 for information on the 2015-2016 grant cycle. Each year, numerous interns receive financial support as part of the Academy’s Internship Grants Program. This year, more than $175,000 was distributed to 22 institutions across the nation. Read more about the interns who have benefited from this program. “One might not expect the day-to-day responsibilities of the average film industry intern to be very glorious, but my experience was a bit different,” opines Colin Wiley, a recent graduate of New York University’s film program and a beneficiary of the Academy’s Internship Grants Program. Wiley worked as an editorial intern on the Spike Lee film “Miracle at St. Anna” in 2008, and said the whole experience left him with a real sense of accomplishment. “There were many occasions when I realized that I was working on something that really had a chance to touch people’s lives in a special way,” recalled Wiley. The internship also led him to the opportunity to work on another of Lee’s projects. Wiley is just one of many students with aspirations to work in the motion picture industry who have been able to make their way into the field as a result of an Academy-funded internship.
Each year, numerous interns receive financial support as part of the Academy’s larger Institutional Grants Program, which seeks to foster educational activities and opportunities between the public and the film industry while encouraging the appreciation of motion pictures as both an art form and a vocation. This year, $500,000 was divided among a record 73 film-related nonprofit organizations, including universities, museums and career development programs. Internships accounted for more than $160,000 of that money, distributed among 21 colleges and universities across the nation.

“Providing funding for student internships is a very important part of the Academy’s educational outreach initiatives,” said Academy Grants Coordinator Shawn Guthrie. “The Institutional Grants Committee strongly believes that high-quality internships are one of the best ways for the next wave of young industry talent to get their feet in the door. Good internships are those that give students the opportunity to do real work, and if a student is doing real work, they need to – and should – receive some kind of meaningful pay.”
Indeed, according to a recent article in the New York Times (April 2, 2010), the United States Department of Labor is cracking down on firms that fail to pay interns properly and is expanding efforts to educate companies, colleges and students on the law regarding internships.
In order to be considered for Academy funding, eligible colleges and universities must submit an application along with a two-page proposal and supporting budgetary documents by the annual January deadline. The strongest proposals are sent on to the Institutional Grants Committee, which in turn selects the most worthy programs to receive funding and determines the amount to be awarded.

The Academy plays no direct role in the operation of the program, or in matching individual students to internships, or in deciding how much money each student is provided for their internship. For example, schools may fund multiple internships all at the same monetary level, or they may vary the amounts based on the level of financial need among the students. The only stipulations set forth by the Academy are that all of the grant money must go to the students – none of the money can be used for program overhead – and that the internships must be related to the theatrical motion picture industry.

The Internship Grants Program has produced a number of success stories, both in terms of the internship experiences themselves and student interns going on to further their goals in the motion picture industry. A few examples:

Andy Uhrich, a recent graduate of the NYU Moving Image Archiving and Preservation program, received considerable hands-on experience from his internship in Spring 2009 with Anthology Film Archives, an international center for the preservation, study, and exhibition of film and video with a particular focus on American independent and avant-garde cinema. Uhrich was tasked with inspecting and preserving Anthology’s collection of films by Sidney Peterson, an American surrealist filmmaker, who in the late 1940s and early 1950s made a series of experimental short films with students at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute).

“I have long been a fan of Peterson’s work, so the opportunity to handle the original film elements, shot and spliced together by Peterson himself, was a fantastic experience,” says Uhrich. “And working on Peterson’s films was an invaluable opportunity for me as an archivist to get a sense of the specialized knowledge needed for preserving experimental and independent films.”

This summer, Uhrich is working at the Chicago Film Archive, which specializes in documentaries, amateur and industrial/sponsored films related to the Midwest. He will begin the PhD Film Studies program in Indiana University’s Communication and Culture Department in the fall.

Hillary Elder, a second year MFA student at UCLA, was selected for a one-on-one internship with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Stephen Burum (“Hoffa,” 1992).  They met once a week for eight hours a day for 10 weeks. Elder learned various lighting techniques, operated a Panaflex GII camera system, and had in-depth conversations with Burum about the art of cinematography.

“Steve is such an incredibly talented cinematographer, and it was very apparent from our first workshop that he wants to give back to future generations of cinematographers by passing on what he knows about the craft,” Elder recalls. “I felt for the first time while enrolled at UCLA that I had a mentor – a mentor who really cared about my progression in cinematography – which is invaluable to me. I knew from the beginning that this internship was going to completely change the way I approach cinematography and that I was going to learn a tremendous amount from it, and I truly have.”

Karen Smalley worked as an intern on “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” in 2004 while enrolled at UCLA. “I was lucky enough to get on a project where dailies were screened on film – a rarity then and almost unheard of now,” explains Smalley. “I built leaders, did edge coding and helped to sync both film and Avid dailies.”

Smalley’s internship experience had a significant influence on her subsequent career-related decisions. “Even though we worked in a very inclusive environment, the majority of the creative editing took place behind closed doors. We generally worked in a more technical arena. It definitely influenced my choice to sidestep the traditional post-production career path and find work as an editor.” In fact, during the past year, Smalley has been working with Roger Corman, for whom she is currently co-editing “Sharktopus.”

In 2002, Emily Hak was a student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She interned at Artisan Entertainment, working in the company’s DVD department.  Her duties included ordering and tracking masters for subtitle creation and delivery, assisting in special feature shoots and commentary records, creating and naming chapter stops, checking final discs prior to manufacturing, and accounting tasks. Today, Hak is the Director of International Creative Services for Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, responsible for international packaging, trade and POS for all international markets.

“The most valuable thing I learned from that internship is that hard work pays off,” says Hak. “I believe that any success I’ve experienced in my career is mostly due to my work ethic and positive attitude, both of which I learned from my internship at Artisan Entertainment.”

ACADEMY TO CELEBRATE OSCAR NIGHT® NEW YORK  AT DANIEL BOULUD'S ICONIC RESTAURANT DANIEL

For the second consecutive year, Chef Daniel Boulud’s iconic, landmark restaurant DANIEL will roll out the red carpet for local members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, entertainment industry executives and several hometown luminaries to celebrate the 86th Oscars® with an exclusive viewing party and dinner.  This is the only East Coast event officially hosted by the Academy.  Coming off its 20th anniversary celebration this past May, DANIEL remains a fixture in the New York restaurant scene.  Chef Boulud, who hails from Lyon, France, is considered one of America’s leading culinary authorities and is one of the most revered chefs in New York City, his home since 1982.

 Chris Hemsworth to Join Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs for Oscar® Nominations

Actor Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs will announce the 86th Academy Awards® nominations  on Thursday, January 16. The Oscars® will air Sunday, March 2, 2014, live on ABC.

Boone Isaacs and Hemsworth will unveil the nominations at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, where hundreds of media representatives from around the world will be gathered.  Nominations information for all categories will be distributed simultaneously to news media in attendance and via the Internet on the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com.

Hemsworth made his feature film debut in 2009’s “Star Trek,” but it was his title role in “Thor” two years later that propelled him to worldwide prominence.  He reprised the character in the Marvel blockbusters “The Avengers” and “Thor: The Dark World.”  Hemsworth’s other feature credits include “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Rush,” and he has starring roles in “Cyber” and “In the Heart of the Sea,” both due out next year.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will present a special screening of the documentary “John F. Kennedy: Years of Lightning, Day of Drums,” on Friday, November 22, the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination. Oscar®-winning writer Aaron Sorkin will introduce the commemorative screening, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy’s Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.

Written, directed and scored by Bruce Herschensohn and narrated by Gregory Peck, the documentary examines Kennedy’s legacy and spotlights many significant events from his presidency, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Bay of Pigs invasion and the launch of the Peace Corps. The film also contains rare color footage from Kennedy’s funeral.

The event also marks the opening of the new exhibition “Richard Williams: Master of Animation” in the Academy’s Grand Lobby Gallery.

Writer-director Gregory Nava, actor Gael García Bernal, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and Gabriel Figueroa Flores will celebrate the life and career of the renowned Mexican cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa on Tuesday, September 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.  The evening will feature an onstage discussion and excerpts from many of Figueroa’s greatest cinematic achievements.  The program serves as a prelude to the exhibition “Under the Mexican Sky: Gabriel Figueroa – Art and Film,” co-presented by the Academy and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which will open at LACMA later this month.

Figueroa (1907–1997) is often referred to as “The Fourth Muralist” of Mexico, and his seminal work contributed to the establishment of a visual culture and national identity in post-revolutionary Mexico.  His films include such Mexican classics as “María Candelaria,” “Enamorada,” “La perla” and “Víctimas del pecado,” which stand alongside works for such diverse directors as John Ford (“The Fugitive”), Luis Buñuel (“Los olvidados”), Don Siegel (“Two Mules for Sister Sara”) and John Huston (“The Night of the Iguana”).  Figueroa’s dazzling black-and-white cinematography for the latter film earned him an Oscar® nomination in 1964.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announces the gift of the Abe and Charlotte Levitow Collection featuring animation art and related production materials documenting the career of animator Abe Levitow. Donated in their parents’ honor by the Levitows’ three children, Roberta, Judy and Jon, the collection features animation cels, backgrounds, storyboards, graphic art materials and related film prints – hundreds of items that represent Levitow’s accomplishments as an artist, animator and director for Warner Bros., UPA and MGM, and include his work on features such as “Gay Purr-ee” (1962) and “The Phantom Tollbooth” (1970).

The collection, which will be housed in both the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library and the Academy Film Archive, is a significant addition to the Academy’s holdings in the animation field. “We are honored that the Levitow family has entrusted the preservation of their father’s legacy to the Academy’s archivists,” said Margaret Herrick Library Director Linda Mehr, “and you really can’t go wrong when Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are in the mix, can you?”

Levitow began his career at Leon Schlesinger Productions, where he served as a publicity artist and animator on cartoons released through Warner Bros. He worked primarily as a member of the Chuck Jones unit, contributing to many of Jones’s films in the late 1940s and early 1950s, including the Academy Award®-winning animated short “For Scent-imental Reasons” (1949). He was elevated to director on several Warner Bros. cartoons before moving on to UPA in the late 1950s, where he served as animation director on the studio’s first feature, “1001 Arabian Nights.”

At UPA, Levitow had two career directing milestones: first, on the animated feature “Gay Purr-ee,” featuring the voices of Judy Garland and Robert Goulet with original songs by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, and then with “Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol,” an animated musical version of the Charles Dickens tale. Following his stint at UPA, Levitow joined the animation unit at MGM, where he directed a number of the later Tom and Jerry cartoons, including “The A-Tom-inable Snowman” (1966), “Guided Mouse-ille” (1967) and “Rock ‘n’ Rodent” (1967).

In addition to the more than 500 pieces of original production art, which will join more than 15,000 such items already held by the Margaret Herrick Library, the Levitow Collection includes scripts, sound recordings and other documentation related to Levitow’s work in film, television and commercials. All of the production materials may be accessed by filmmakers, historians, journalists, students and the public at the library, located in the Academy’s Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills. Many of the pieces in the Levitow Collection are available for viewing online through the Library’s Production Art Database at http://collections.oscars.org/prodart. ACADEMY NAMES 2013–2014 BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Ten first-time governors have been elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors. In addition, eight incumbents have been reelected and one previous governor is returning to the board. This year’s election increases the Academy’s governing body from 43 to 48.

The first-time governors are Judianna Makovsky and Deborah Nadoolman, representing the Costume Designers Branch; Rick Carter and Jan Pascale, Designers Branch; Alex Gibney, Documentary; Lynzee Klingman, Film Editors; Amy Pascal, Executives; Kathryn Blondell and Bill Corso, Makeup Artists and Hairstylists; and Nancy Utley, Public Relations.

The reelected governors are Ed Begley, Jr., Actors Branch; John Bailey, Cinematographers; Kathryn Bigelow, Directors; Charles Fox, Music; Jon Bloom, Short Films and Feature Animation; Curt Behlmer, Sound; Richard Edlund, Visual Effects; and Robin Swicord, Writers.

Mark Johnson, representing the Producers Branch, is returning to the board after a hiatus.

The Academy’s 16 branches, including the recently created Costume Designers Branch, are each represented by three governors, who may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms. For the first time, the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch is represented by three governors; the branch was previously represented by one.
