MOCA LAUNCHES NEW AWARENESS AND MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN

MOCA / Anything L.A.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles launches today a new awareness and membership campaign boosted by the museum’s fast-growing and diverse online following. The campaign message Art is for You is designed to appeal directly to a broad local and international audience actively participating in contemporary visual culture through social media channels.

MOCA’s activity across the major social media platforms, along with the launch of MOCAtv last year and on-going distribution of original online content, has engaged millions of new museum followers. MOCA approached this new audience with an open invitation to participate in a video series answering questions about their personal experiences with contemporary art in a specially installed video booth at MOCA Grand Avenue. Museum visitors of all ages recorded their thoughts about a favorite MOCA exhibition or artwork, the meaning of contemporary art, and what they hoped to see in the future at a contemporary art museum. Hundreds of participants shared their opinions, including, among others, artists Gary Baseman, Cai Guo-Qiang, Dynasty Handbag, Shepard Fairey, FriendsWithYou, Rafaël Rozendaal, Kenny Scharf, Bec Stupak, Mario Ybarra, Jr., and Aaron Young.

The campaign, which began with a direct mail initiative sent to more than 50,000 recipients, will continue with the premiere of three short videos created from the recorded contributions of the video booth participants. The first video launches today, and viewers will be directed to a dedicated web site with special content and online MOCA membership sign-up at artisforyou.org.

MOCA has presented nearly 400 groundbreaking and critically acclaimed exhibitions since its founding in 1979, with more than 100 focused on the museum’s renowned permanent collection. Part of MOCA’s mission is a deep commitment to educational programming, with the belief that exposure to contemporary art enriches audiences young and old. The message Art is for You reflects the museum’s boundary-pushing programming, encouraging exchanges and interactions between artists and the growing museum public.

Art is for You offers an opportunity for a new audience to be part of MOCA’s history by contributing to its future. Support from MOCA members will help ensure an independent MOCA and allows them to play a direct and personal role in making this remarkable art accessible now and for future generations.
