Mass Shooting At Ft. Lauderdale Airport

The shooting occurred following the landing of a Delta Flight 2182, from Minneapolis-St. Paul, at the Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, in the baggage claim area on terminal 2. According to reports, the gunman retrieved a gun from his legally checked-in luggage, loaded it and started shooting at random. He reloaded at least twice.

As a result 5 people are dead and 8 injured. The gunman was apprehended and taken into custody without incident. (A passenger reported that the gunman threw the weapon down and surrendered voluntarily.)

The suspect carried a military ID and was identified as a 26 year old Esteban Santiago. Santiago is a veteran of the war in Iraq, he was a member of the National Guard. He was discharged from the National Guard last year for “unsatisfactory performance”.

Santiago displayed disturbing symptoms when he reported to the FBI in Anchorage, Alaska that his mind is being controlled and he’s forced to watch ISIS videos. This incident took place in November. Santiago was sent for psychiatric evaluation and then… released.

Esteban Santiago doesn’t have any known affiliation with terrorism. He didn’t have accomplices in the horrific Ft. Lauderdale shooting. The motif of the gunman is unknown. Based on the information available so far, the shooting appears to be an act of a mentally disturbed individual. (Both, federal officials and Santiago’s brother say that the gunman was receiving psychological treatment.)

Following the shooting, Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport is only partially open for flights. A toll-free number for passengers and their families was established by local officials. If you have questions about any of the passengers of Delta Flight 2182 call 866-435-9355.

President Obama and President Elect Trump expressed their condolences to families of the victims.
