Cocaine Dealing At Day Care Stopped

CITY ATTORNEY FEUER SECURES INJUNCTION SHUTTING DOWN AN UNLICENSED HIGHLAND PARK DAY CARE CENTER OPERATING AT A PROPERTY ALLEGEDLY KNOWN FOR LARGE SCALE COCAINE SALES

City Attorney Mike Feuer announced that his office has successfully secured a preliminary injunction ordering the owners of a Highland Park property to comply with numerous safety and security conditions including the immediate shut down of an alleged unlicensed child care business where more than 20 kilograms of cocaine were recently recovered.

“The drug activity we allege at this home was a massive blight on the community and especially outrageous because little kids were caught right in the middle of it,” said City Attorney Feuer. “Shutting down this day care center, combined with the other tough conditions we fought for, will make this neighborhood safer for everyone.”

The injunction, granted by Judge James Chalfant, orders Felipe Talamante and Prodigios Garcia Talamante, the father-son owners of the multi-unit residential property at 5215 Marmion Way in Northeast Los Angeles, to refrain from operating a day care business at the property; to refrain from allowing non-resident children on site unless accompanied by their parents; to refrain from advertising or marketing the location as a child care facility; as well as requiring them to post signs notifying the public that babysitting and child care are not allowed at the property.

The court also prohibited the Talamantes from immediately selling the property and allowing any firearms on the property. The court further ordered the Talamantes to terminate the tenancy of son/brother, Miguel Talamante, based on his arrest for narcotic sales and to install proper lighting and maintenance.

For at least the past two years, the property allegedly has been known by law enforcement as a location for the distribution of narcotics and has been heavily frequented by drug users and buyers. The location was also allegedly being used as an unlicensed day care business for children between two and ten years old. It is located within 900 feet of Monte Vista Elementary school.

In 2015, a search warrant was issued on the property resulting in the arrest of defendant Felipe Talamante and the recovery of 20 kilograms of cocaine. In May 2017, a second search warrant was served on the property resulting in the recovery of an additional 20 kilograms of cocaine as well as two rocks of cocaine and digital sales. Defendant Felipe Talamante was taken into custody for narcotics sales and child endangerment.

Investigators observed children being dropped off at the location throughout the day as part of the illegal child care business and numerous children were observed playing on the patio where criminal activity was taking place. The recovered cocaine was also found in the same room as a child-size mattress.

City Attorney Feuer has expanded his Federal and Local Special Abatement Operations Unit, which, since July, 2013, has filed 89 abatement actions and obtained 83 injunctions requiring comprehensive physical and managerial improvements to nuisance properties. In this same time period, the office has successfully secured the closure of 10 gang/narcotics locations and recovered over $845,000 in costs and fees. Feuer also recently established an easy-to-use online method through which residents may report properties with gang and/or narcotics activity in their neighborhoods. He’s asking residents to report these properties by calling his office at (213) 978-8340 or visiting the City Attorney’s website: www.lacityattorney.org. All reports may be made anonymously.

Tony and Olivier Award-Winning Best Play
A New Play by Simon Stephens
Adapted From the Novel by Mark Haddon
Directed by Marianne Elliott

Presented by Center Theatre Group, The National Theatre production of “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” will begin performances at the Ahmanson Theatre on August 2 with the opening set for August 3. The Tony Award-winning new play by Simon Stephens is adapted from Mark Haddon’s best-selling novel and directed by Tony winner Marianne Elliott (“War Horse”). Performances will continue through September 10, 2017.

The “Curious Incident…” cast includes Juilliard graduate Adam Langdon as Christopher, Gene Gillette (“War Horse”) as Ed, Felicity Jones Latta (“Metamorphoses”) as Judy, Maria Elena Ramirez (“Fish in the Dark”) as Siobhan and Amelia White (“The Heiress”) as Mrs. Alexander. The ensemble includes Brian Robert Burns (“War Horse”), Francesca Choy-Kee (“Disgraced”), Josephine Hall (“Les Liaisons Dangereuses”), John Hemphill (“School of Rock”), Robyn Kerr (“Dark Vanilla Jungle”), Kathy McCafferty (“Dada Woof Papa Hot”), Tim McKiernan (“War Horse”), J. The production is designed by Tony Award winner Bunny Christie and Tony Award-winning video designer Finn Ross, with lighting by Tony Award winner Paule Constable, choreography by Scott Graham and Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett for Frantic Assembly, music by Adrian Sutton, sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph, and hair and wig design by David Brian Brown. Casting is by Daniel Swee, CSA and Cindy Tolan, CSA.

In “… this highly original, deeply engaging play” (Elysa Gardner, USA Today), 15-year old Christopher has an extraordinary brain; he is exceptionally intelligent but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion for killing his neighbor’s dog, he sets out to identify the true culprit, which leads to an earth-shattering discovery and a journey that will change his life forever.

Ben Brantley of The New York Times said this play is “… one of the most fully immersive works ever to wallop Broadway. Be prepared to have all your emotional and sensory buttons pushed, including a few you may have not known existed.”

Richard Zoglin of Time Magazine said that “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” is “… a play that works on every level — crowd-pleasing, eye-opening, life-affirming and unmissable.”

“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” transferred to London’s West End, following a sold-out run at the National’s Cottesloe Theatre in 2012. The production received seven 2013 Olivier Awards, including Best New Play and continues to play to sold-out houses at the Gielgud Theatre in London. A UK and Ireland Tour launched in 2014 and a second tour of the UK and Ireland launched in January of this year.

“Curious Incident…,” the longest running play on Broadway in the past 10 years, opened on October 5, 2014, at the Barrymore Theatre, winning five Tony Awards including Best Play, six Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Play, five Outer Critics Circle Awards including Outstanding Production of a Broadway Play and the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play.

White House Infighting vs. Nuclear Threat

Anthony Scaramucci is in. White House chief of staff Reince Priebus is out. No transgenders in American military. Obamacare stands. North Korea threatens.

New Communication’s Director
Sean Spicer is on the way out. New communication’s director – Anthony Scaramucci – is in. In just days we’ve learned A LOT about him. He is President Trump’s devotee and certainly doesn’t mince words….

As for Scaramucci’s “colorful” – or off-color – language, the whole country was taken by surprise. His “directness”, I’m referring here to Scaramucci calling the chief of staff Reince Priebus “…… paranoid schizophrenic” and “paranoiac”, was equally shocking. Neither however elicited any response from the President. The lack of the President Trump’s reaction is telling. It suggests that Scaramucci’s “style” is acceptable. It may suggest that this is how conversations in Trump’s White House are conducted. Diplomatic protocol, basic decency and social norms, leave alone: respect for the office are history.

Ouster of the chief of staff
Just a day after the new communication director’s outburst against the White House chief of staff, Reince Priebus was let go. (Keep an eye on Scaramucci: he is not only entertaining but a good indicator of the President’s upcoming actions.) The new chief of staff is now General John Kelly whose work as the Secretary of United States Homeland Security earned President Trump’s recognition.

The President encourages police “Not to be so nice”
President Trump himself attracted plenty of attention last week when he told a crowd of law enforcement officers during a rally in Suffolk County, New York “Not to be so nice” while arresting suspects. (The President of United States encouraging police brutality?! Don’t we have enough of it already?) To the police’s credit, it responded to his wish with a firm refusal.

No place for transgenders in American military
In one of his many tweets, President Trump announced that transgender service members will no longer be a part of the United States military. In his own words, the President arrived at this decision after consulting with “his generals”. In response the actual United States’ generals – who unlike the “President’s generals” were not consulted – stated that no action will be taken based on a tweet.

Transgender – and other members of the LGBTQ community’s – service was and is used by the military. Many of the LGBTQ soldiers are decorated veterans. To the best of my knowledge, all have served – and are serving – with honor. How disgusting, to take advantage of someone’s patriotism, commitment and sacrifice and then dispose of him or her on a whim….

This is Los Angeles reaction to the President’s new plan against transgender members in the U.S. armed forces.

Mayor Garcetti on President Trump’s ban on military service by transgender Americans:
“No one who is patriotic, courageous, and selfless enough to serve in the armed forces should be denied that opportunity because of who they are. The President’s decision to bar transgender Americans from military service is at odds with the values of freedom and equality that our men and women in uniform fight for every day. Equality and respect — not discrimination — should guide how we treat anyone willing to risk their life to defend our country and its people.”

City Attorney Mike Feuer Statement on Trump Ban of Transgender Service Members:
“The 15,000 transgender men and women now protecting our nation deserve our deepest gratitude for their courage and patriotism. But today our commander-in-chief dishonored their service and denigrated their humanity in a reprehensible act of discrimination. This is outrageous on every level. To transgender people here in Los Angeles, you will always have a staunch ally in this office.”

Another attack at Affordable Care Act failed: Obamacare stands.
Meanwhile in the Senate, the latest attempt at demolishing the Affordable Care Act took place. Known as the “skinny repeal” without a replacement, the latest attempt at harming Americans failed.

Three brave Americans – Republican Senators – cast the deciding votes against it: Senator Susan Collins of Maine, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Senator John McCain of Arizona.

The first speech John McCain has given upon his return to the Senate – after being diagnosed with brain cancer – was met with considerable criticism. To us, his NO vote on the skinny repeal confirms that once a hero, always a hero. (Senator John McCain returned to Arizona for cancer treatment and we wish him all the best!)

Anything L.A. Liberal Magazine applauds all three Senators who put allegiance to their constituents above political expediency. There isn’t much integrity left in the Republican Party but there is still some.

Meanwhile in the world
In North Korea, another successful missile launch took place. It is now believed that the North Korean military has the ability to deliver a nuclear warhead not just to Hawaii but Los Angeles, Chicago or New York.

In the United Kingdom, the parents of little Charlie Gard gave up their legal battle to have the baby treated in the United States. Charlie died last week before reaching his 1st birthday. The “wisdom” of the government prevailed over parental love. Predictably, the baby died. Rest in peace, Charlie. Our prayers are with Charlie’s parents.

*

Another bewildering week: one wonders whom today’s White House represents and whose interests it “serves”. Between public cursing and infighting, lack of gratitude, calls to brutality, repeated attempts to deprive the most vulnerable Americans of healthcare, did our government notice that we might be facing a NUCLEAR THREAT?…..

Los Angeles Supports Trans Youth

Mayor Garcetti Removes Barriers to Employment For Trans Youth

Case managers, career advisors, and advocates attend training to learn how to better serve transgender youth seeking employment

A new series of trainings spearheaded by Mayor Eric Garcetti and LGBTQ advocates are promoting employment practices that can expand career opportunities for transgender young people.

More than 100 caseworkers from City and County agencies and local non-profits attended inaugural training, where they learned about trans-specific barriers to employment, the transition process, preferred gender pronouns and vocabulary, and key differences between sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. This training, and the L.A. Transgender Youth Employment Toolkit, are designed to support employment case managers in meeting the needs of transgender clients, and encourage employers to hire LGBTQ youth.

“Everyone deserves the chance to build a career and prosper,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Transgender youth are among the most vulnerable Angelenos — and employers and advocates should have the tools to help young people get on the path to meaningful opportunities in every sector of the economy.”

The workshops are part of Mayor Garcetti’s commitment to grow the number and quality of jobs in the HIRE LA’s Youth program, and bring together public and nonprofit partners to empower LGBTQ youth as they prepare to enter the workforce. Since taking office, Mayor Garcetti has tripled the number of youth jobs in Los Angeles, and set a new goal to hire 20,000 young people for year-round employment by 2020.

The training was delivered in partnership with the Los Angeles LGBT Center, Los Angeles Performance Partnership Pilot (LAP3) Initiative, and University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA)’ Community Based Learning Program, and specifically targets foster youth, youth on probation, and homeless youth.

“Young transgender people face significant challenges in entering the workforce and finding meaningful career pathways. Many of them who cannot attain employment face the risk of becoming homeless,” said Simon Costello, director of the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Children, Youth & Family Services. “This indispensable training to case managers and career advisors will help empower trans youth in becoming equal and complete members of society. Thank you to Mayor Garcetti’s Office of Economic Opportunity, the City of Los Angeles Economic and Workforce Development Department, and the Los Angeles Performance Partnership Pilot for helping some of the most vulnerable and underserved young people in the community.”

According to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, the unemployment rate for transgender people is twice that of the general population, and nearly four times as high for transgender people of color. According to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, when unemployed, transgender people are twice as likely to become homeless or turn to underground economies like sex work and illegal drug sales, 85% more likely to become incarcerated, and twice as likely to become infected with HIV.

The 2017 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Youth Count estimates that nearly 6,000 Transition Age Youth, ages 18-24, in the County are homeless on any given night, a staggering 64% increase over last year. A disproportionate number of these young people identify as LGBTQ.

Today’s trainings underscore the importance of equipping young Angelenos with essential tools that will set them on a path to gainful employment and away from homelessness.

“EWDD is pleased to support the Transgender Youth Employment Toolkit,” said Jan Perry, General Manager of the City of Los Angeles Economic and Workforce Development Department. “This enhancement will enable the trainers to be highly sensitized to the unique issues that transgender youth face in the workplace and provide a pathway for trainers to help trans youth navigate the complexities of getting a job.”
“The strength of Los Angeles lies in its diversity and that includes the many youth job seekers that case managers encounter” said Mary Keipp, Program Director of UCLA’s Community Based Learning Program. “Our workforce development professionals may not have had experience assisting transgender youth. Thus we hope the toolkit and training will provide a growth opportunity for case managers and career advisors in working with this very vulnerable population. Thanks to Mayor Garcetti’s Office of Economic Opportunity, the City of Los Angeles Workforce Development Board, the California Workforce Development Board and the LA LGBT Center for helping to better serve transgender youth in their pathway to adulthood.”

Participants included representatives from the City of Los Angeles YouthSource System; LAHSA’s Coordinated Entry System; Los Angeles County’s Office of Education and Departments of Mental Health and Workforce Development; Aging and Community Services; the L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce; the L.A. Community College District; L.A.’s BEST; Mexican American Opportunity Foundation; Five Keys Charter School and Programs; the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, and a range of City and non-profit partners, including the Youth Policy Institute and Communities In Schools.

In May of 2016, the Mayor and other City leaders made L.A. the nation’s largest city to establish a permanent council of transgender community leaders with the creation of the Human Relations Commission’s Transgender Advisory Council. Last October, the L.A. earned a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2016 Municipality Equality Index (MEI) scorecard for being a national leader in advancing LGBTQ rights for a fifth consecutive year.

About the Transgender Youth Employment Toolkit
Released June in 2016, the toolkit is a resource of the Los Angeles LGBT Center released for case managers and others to assist them in helping to prepare transgender youth for the workforce. It was developed as a part of the Transitions to Work (T2W) project, a collaboration between the Los Angeles LGBT Center, University of California at Los Angeles’ (UCLA) Community Based Learning Program, the City of Los Angeles Workforce Development Board, and the City of Los Angeles Economic and Workforce Development Department. The toolkit was funded by grants from the California Workforce Development Board and the City of Los Angeles Department on Disability, AIDS Coordinator’s Office. The toolkit is available online at http://lalgbtcenter.org/social-service-and-housing/transgender/t2w

Conviction For Falsely Triggering Amber Alert

CITY ATTORNEY MIKE FEUER SECURES CONVICTION AGAINST WOMAN WHO FILED A FALSE CARJACKING REPORT THAT TRIGGERED AN AMBER ALERT

City Attorney Mike Feuer announced that his office has successfully secured a conviction and a 60-day jail sentence against a Los Angeles woman for falsely reporting to police a carjacking allegedly involving the kidnapping of her 16-year old stepson which triggered an Amber Alert.

“Making a false criminal report is a serious offense with real consequences. It squanders precious law enforcement resources that should be devoted to solving actual crimes,” said Feuer. “And here, this reckless and irresponsible action triggered an Amber Alert that diverted attention throughout our region.”

Charline Gatson, 26, entered a plea of no contest to one count of filing a false police report. Gaston was sentenced to 36 months of probation, 60 days in county jail as well as a $220 fine. A restitution hearing will be scheduled for a later date.

On July 6, 2017 Gatson allegedly reported that her vehicle was stolen at gunpoint from her Vermont Knolls neighborhood in South Los Angeles near 47th and Figueroa Street. In her report, Gaston alleged that her teenage stepson was in the vehicle at the time triggering an Amber Alert. Police later found the vehicle and determined that Gatson’s police report was false and no carjacking had occurred and the stepson was not involved. Gaston was subsequently arrested and booked at LAPD’s 77th Station.

At the time of her arrest Gatson also was wanted on an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court for a restitution hearing on a 2015 conviction for auto theft.

Deputy City Attorney Bethelwel Wilson successfully prosecuted the case.

Trumpcare Fails, Sessions Is Disloyal, Loyal Spicer Resigns

Last week in the United States. The strong rule. The weak continue losing. Common sense is out the window. Francis Coppola created a monster.

Trumpcare falls flat which would be a reason to celebrate except the proposed “repeal” of Obamacare without an immediate “replacement” might leave even more people without health insurance than the convoluted Trumpcare itself.

President Trump goes on record saying that had he known Jeff Sessions will recuse himself from the Russia investigation, he wouldn’t have hired him! (One has to wonder about the President’s understanding of the government’s structure. The Attorney General is not – and shouldn’t be – beholden or “loyal” to the president but to the law and the American Constitution…..)
Did you too notice that the words and behaviors of the President don’t resemble those of ANY American president, but are eerily similar to those of a very famous film character? (Yes, I’m referring to the 1972 Francis Coppola movie.) One is almost tempted to believe that by providing a “role model”, Francis Coppola created a monster.

The President has more and more objections regarding the staff, work and direction the investigation of Special Counsel Mueller is taking. According to reports, the lawyer hired by President Trump to defend himself from Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation is researching “immunity” and “pardons”.

Nearly every day(!) additional details emerge about the meeting of Donald Trump Jr. with the Russian government’s attorney: now we know that EIGHT people attended the meeting. (One of them was a Russian businessman – United States resident – once suspected of laundering over a billion dollars of Russian money…)

We’ve learned also about yet another meeting between President Trump and President Putin while in Hamburg which wasn’t previously disclosed. Only the two presidents and their wives + one Russian translator participated. The get-together was so innocent that no one but the President represented the United States during the secret meeting. It barely deserved the much belated mention.

Arizona Senator John McCain, 80, who underwent a blood clot surgery last week, was diagnosed with brain cancer.

O.J. Simpson, 70, was paroled after serving nine years of his 33 year sentence for armed robbery in Nevada. Simpson is expected to be a free man on October 1st of this year. Rumor has it that numerous media outlets are competing for interviews once the “Juice” is released. Simpson’s celebrity life will resume in October. Meanwhile, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman are still dead. There is a relief from a prison sentence, but no respite from death.

Sean Spicer resigns or is forced to resign, depending whom you believe. The man must have REALLY needed a job! God knows he’s done the possible – and the impossible: “Even Hitler didn’t use chemical warfare” – to accommodate President Trump…

And how was YOUR week?

Here's a tip for Special Counsel Mueller: no one but a godfather insists on "loyalty". OJ Simpson Paroled: Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman Still Dead

OJ Simpson Paroled:

Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman Still Dead

After nine years in prison for armed robbery, on Thursday, July 20th 2017 O.J. Simpson was granted parole in Nevada.

According to reports during the time he served in the Lovelock Correctional Center, O.J. was a model prisoner fulfilling and exceeding his obligations. He managed to avoid conflicts and never been a subject to a disciplinary action. He completed “Alternative To Violence” and a “Victim Empathy” course, coached athletic teams and even became involved in creating a Baptist service behind bars.

O.J. Simpson came well prepared to the parole hearing. He sounded humble and sincere. Among those who expressed their support for Simpson and spoke in support of the parole were his eldest daughter Arnelle Simpson and his friend – one of the 2007 robbery’s victims – Bruce Fromong, a sports memorabilia dealer.

The parole was granted and O.J. could be released as early as October 1st of this year.

Simpson’s plans after his release are not known. Some speculate that he might return to Florida where two of his youngest children live. (Returning to Florida would provide him with the legal advantage of the “homestead law” which would help him protect his assets from seizure by Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman estates which are still being owed $33.5 million, plus interest.) There are also rumors that Simpson may settle in Sacramento, CA. One thing on which all sources agree is that once released, Simpson will receive his NFL pension (which is protected from seizure by law); he also has a retirement plan with the Screen Actor’s Guild.

Even after a long absence from media spotlight, the 70-year old O.J. Simpson managed to captivate audiences across all media during his parole hearing. He was sympathetic and convincing, almost likeable… to someone who never heard of the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

While appealing for sympathy, O.J. Simpson spoke of his life as free of criminal activity, at one point even saying “I lived a conflict-free life.” As if domestic violence and a brutal double-murder weren’t parts of his life. R.I.P. Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. O.J. may have forgotten, we didn’t.

Senator John McCain Brain Cancer

Arizona Senator John McCain, 80, who underwent a blood clot surgery last week, was diagnosed with brain cancer. The finding was made by a lab analyzing the removed tissue. It is believed that the entire cancerous tissue has been removed. Senator McCain is recuperating at home and is said to be in good spirits, assuring friends of his intention to resume his work, shortly.

Senator John McCain, a Republican, is well-liked and respected by politicians on both sides of the aisle. A survivor of torture at the hands of the Vietnamese as a prisoner-of-war, he is recognized for his fairness and integrity.

The type of cancer he’s been diagnosed with is a primary glioblastoma. It is the same type of brain cancer that killed Senator Ted Kennedy and the son of former Vice President Joe Biden. Experts explain that the average survival for patients with malignant primary glioblastoma – who receive treatment – is about 14 months. According to American Brain Tumor Association however a study done in 2009 indicates that nearly 10% glioblastoma patients live 5 years and longer.

Senator John McCain has a reputation as a fighter. There is every reason to believe that he’ll be among the lucky 10%. He survived many trials others wouldn’t have. Anything L.A. Liberal Magazine joins the many other well-wishers who hope for the Senator’s full recovery and continued good health. There is never too much integrity in politics. With so many politicians without – not just integrity, but – conscience today, we cannot afford to lose a politician who has both.

Ramifications Of Leaving A Pet In A Hot Car

CITY ATTORNEY MIKE FEUER SPOTLIGHTS AVOIDABLE TRAGEDY OF PETS DYING IN HOT PARKED CARS

Joins with L.A. Animal Services to Detail Legal Ramifications Including Animal Cruelty Charges and Jail for Offenders

Asks Residents to Report When Animals are Unattended In Vehicles This Summer

To spotlight the potential double tragedy of having a pet die in a hot parked car and then having its guardian charged with animal cruelty, City Attorney Mike Feuer appeared with L.A. Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette to urge people not to leave their pets in parked cars, detail what steps people should take if they see a pet in danger in a parked car and discuss the legal ramifications, which could include jail time for an animal’s guardian.

“We’re here today to prevent the needless tragedy of a beloved pet suffering or dying because its guardian thoughtlessly leaves their companion animal in a hot, parked car. The facts are so clear: It takes just 15 minutes for an animal to suffer brain damage when temperatures soar on a hot summer day in a parked vehicle. Cracking a window open doesn’t do nearly enough to cool your car down sufficiently,” said Feuer. “This isn’t only a health and safety issue for your pet, it’s a legal issue, too. Leaving your companion animal in a parked car in the heat of the day is against the law, and can lead to serious animal cruelty charges, fines, even jail.”

“It is up to us to make the safe decision when our furry friends. If you are not going to be able to take your dogs in with you every time you get out of the car, make the safe choice and leave him at home,” said Brenda Barnette. “A quick stop may feel like no time at all to you, but it’s too long to leave your pet in a vehicle unattended on a warm summer day. When it’s hot outside, even with the windows open, a parked car can become an oven in minutes, and endanger the life of your pet.”

“Leaving a pet in a locked car is stupid or deliberately cruel, or both,” said Bob Barker, iconic game show host and animal rights activist.

Since January, people are legally allowed to break into a parked car in order to remove an animal that appears to be in danger only after calling 911 or Animal Services (213) 486-0450 first. If the dog’s guardian is found guilty of such animal cruelty, California Penal Code section 597.7 provides a tiered punishment system with a fine and infraction conviction for a first time offender with no great bodily injury to the dog, and more serious misdemeanor punishment and possible jail time for repeat offenders or first timers where there is great bodily injury involved.

The East Valley Animal Shelter, one of six managed by L.A. Animal Services, invites you to consider adopting some of the wonderful dogs and cats. You can search online to find your perfect new addition or stop by in person Tuesday – Saturday, 8am – 5pm, or Sunday, 11am – 5pm.

The Inappropriate Trumps

The puzzling question for today is the meaning of the word “inappropriate”. According to Dictionary.com inappropriate means: “not appropriate; not proper or suitable: an inappropriate dress for the occasion.”

As far as I know, if you make a stain on my floor, refer to Grandma as “the old witch”, call Doctor Smith Bob or wear flip-flops on a visit to the White House that’s inappropriate.

When Southern California City of Bell officials enriched themselves unjustly they were charged with corruption and sent to prison. When individuals holding public offices – in California and elsewhere in the United States – were found to generate personal revenue by granting favors for profit, accepting bribes, or otherwise benefiting from the public offices they held, they weren’t rebuked for being “inappropriate”. They too faced criminal charges and were sent to prison.
When the President’s private businesses are booming – in large part because he is the President! – that’s not illegal, merely “inappropriate”.

Changing the subject, if John Doe held a meeting with a Russian government’s lawyer who – benevolently, of course! – wanted to support his pursuit of happiness and the FBI got wind of it, John Doe would be charged with a number of federal offenses including, at the very least: terrorism, espionage and treason and would undoubtedly be convicted and sent to a federal prison for a VERY long time. When Donald Trump Jr. has such a meeting – the character and intent of which as well as his enthusiastic reaction to its promise are clearly reflected in the emails he released this week – his behavior is described as “inappropriate”?!

(Can you believe that having complimented the then-California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris for being “the best-looking attorney general”, President Obama was criticized for being “inappropriate”? Compare the “inappropriateness” of complimenting a beautiful woman with President Trump’s “grab them by the p…” or Donald Trump Jr.’s – and others in current administration – secret meetings with Russians!)

In conclusion, what’s disturbingly INAPPROPRIATE is that by all appearances we are NOT equal under the law. Some are clearly above it.

Consumers Get Leverage Over Banks

On July 10th 2017, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a new rule banning banks from using arbitration clauses. This is a major step toward leveling the field for consumers.

Until now, most banks’ – and other financial institutions’ – contracts have used arbitrations clauses which means that we as consumers were bared from seeking justice in the courts.

Arbitration clauses were favorable for financial institution and helped them victimize numerous customers in the same way, while consumers had no way of fighting back. (In other words, banks were able to cheat consumers at their discretion and – by the use of the arbitration clauses in their contracts – made themselves immune to class action lawsuits.) Now, the new rule enables the many exploited consumers of the same financial institution to get together and file class action lawsuits to recover their money!

A word on class action lawsuits: in most cases, the overcharges by banks and financial institutions are relatively small and as such don’t justify the cost of filing an individual lawsuit. Still, such “small” amounts overcharged to thousands or even millions of consumers add up: they unjustly enrich banks at the expense of consumers. A class action lawsuit is the most effective – and cost-effective! – option for a group of consumers to sue to recoup their losses and stop banks from victimizing consumers.

As much as we don’t know what inspired Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to introduce the latest ruling in favor of consumers, it is quite possible that our own – Los Angeles! – City Attorney Mike Feuer’s victory over Wells Fargo Bank might have triggered the change.

In a statement following the announcement of the new rule, Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer said:

“This CFPB action is a major victory for every American who’s been scammed by a financial institution–but blocked from getting real relief because the amount pilfered from that one consumer, taken alone, just didn’t justify the fight. Now everyday consumers can join forces to compel companies to stop unfair practices. That’s good for consumers, and it’s good for competing businesses that play by the rules.

While already there’s talk that Republicans in Congress will move to block the CFPB’s action, lawmakers would do so at their peril. Financial institutions may bankroll campaigns. But consumers vote.”

2017 G20 Summit, 2018 Global Climate Action, Volvo Electric, Ethics Belly-Up In Washington

Highlights of last weeks’ Los Angeles news, California news, United States news and world news

The 4th of July has come and gone.

Los Angeles sworn in its Democratic City Leadership for the second term: good for us and good for our City.

Meanwhile in Sacramento, our fine Democratic Governor Jerry Brown announced that San Francisco will convene the 2018 Climate Action Summit. His unprecedented decision will make California the first U.S. STATE to host an international climate change conference with the direct goal of supporting the Paris Agreement. (What else to do when the federal government consists of billionaires who can afford to evacuate to an alternate planet while the rest of us can’t? Someone had to take the lead and coordinate efforts to keep the United States and the Earth from boiling over….) California supports the Paris Agreement even if President Trump doesn’t. Thanks God, Governor Brown – unlike the President – has the wisdom, foresight and integrity of a leader!

President Trump went to Europe to attend the 2017 G20 summit. Among the “highlights” of his trip were:

  • a visit to Poland, among the topics President Trump discussed with the Polish President was freedom of the press

  • and his first, closed-door, meeting with President Putin. The two leaders agreed on a temporary cease fire in Syria. President Putin denied any “meddling” in our elections.
  • Ivanka Trump has taken her father’s seat – and his role – on an occasion or two astounding us and the leaders of the world. (After all, the G20 summit is a conference of elected world leaders, not a family party.)

While the 2017 G20 summit run its course isolated from the “real world” outside, massive crowds took to the streets of Hamburg, Germany to protest the spread of unbridled capitalism that tramples workers rights….

Here at home, Mr. Walter Shaub Jr., the Director of the Office of Government Ethics, announced that he’s resigning. Having tried unsuccessfully to enforce ethics rules on the current administration, Mr. Shaub is doing the only honorable thing he has left: he is giving up a job which duties are impossible to fulfill.

He tried to convince President Trump to separate himself from his private business affairs and failed. He agonized over issuing improperly requested retroactive ethics waivers to White House staffers. Having faced numerous ethical improprieties that couldn’t be – and shouldn’t have been – ignored, he eventually gave up.

Asked directly by an interviewer whether the White House / President Trump committed any actual violations, the Director of the Office of Government Ethics replied diplomatically that as much as it is possible that no major rules were broken by the current administration, the actions of the White House raise so many ethical concerns that the public will never know for sure whether the President’s actions are driven by the best interests of the Country or his desire to enrich himself.

When the Director of the Office of Government Ethics gives up because ethics is rejected and ignored by the White House, it is time to worry. When our own government refuses to act in ethical way; when the proposed changes, new laws and regulations raise too many ethical questions (case in point, the healthcare bill that no sane member of the House supports) REMEMBER that the guy in charge of enforcing ethics walked away in despair. (And he knows more than we do.)

2018 Climate Action Summit To Take Place In San Francisco

Photo property of PBS News Hour

California Governor Brown Announces Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco in September 2018

On July 6th on the eve of the G20 Summit, California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced via video message at the Global Citizen Festival in Hamburg, Germany that the State of California will convene the world’s climate leaders in San Francisco, California in September 2018 for the Global Climate Action Summit.

“It’s up to you and it’s up to me and tens of millions of other people to get it together to roll back the forces of carbonization and join together to combat the existential threat of climate change. That is why we’re having the Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, September 2018,” said Governor Brown in his remarks. “President Trump is trying to get out of the Paris Agreement, but he doesn’t speak for the rest of America. We in California and in states all across America believe it’s time to act, it’s time to join together and that’s why at this Climate Action Summit we’re going to get it done.”

The Governor spoke via video message during the final hour of the Global Citizen Festival in Hamburg, Germany and was introduced by Christiana Figueres, former United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary and currently the convener of Mission 2020 and Global Ambassador for the Under2 Coalition. The Global Citizen Festival was attended by thousands of people and featured remarks from Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Norway’s Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri and performances from Coldplay, Shakira, Pharrell Williams, Ellie Goulding and others.

California will convene representatives from subnational governments, businesses, investors and civil society at the Global Climate Action Summit to demonstrate the groundswell of innovative, ambitious climate action from leaders around the world, highlight the economic and environmental transition already underway and spur deeper commitment from all parties, including national governments.

Today’s announcement is the product of months of discussions between the Governor and Christiana Figueres, who, following the conclusion of the successful UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, encouraged the Governor to host a summit in 2018 in California to drive further climate action. Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León has also been a key partner and recently joined other state Senators to urge the Governor to convene the world’s climate leaders in California.

“The growing threat of climate change demands an immediate and unified global response,” said Senate Leader Kevin de León. “California remains committed to a clean energy future and we welcome the responsibility to lead on America’s behalf. My colleagues in the Senate appreciate Governor Brown agreeing to hold this global summit and look forward to working with him to welcome our partners from around the world.”

The summit, which will be held ahead of the 24th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 24), will mark the first time a U.S. state has hosted an international climate change conference with the direct goal of supporting the Paris Agreement.

Governor Brown’s complete remarks are below:

“Hello, Hamburg. I’m Governor Jerry Brown. Greetings from California.

Look, it’s up to you and it’s up to me and tens of millions of other people to get it together to roll back the forces of carbonization and join together to combat the existential threat of climate change. That’s why we’re having the Climate Action Summit in San Francisco, September 2018.

Come join us – entrepreneurs, singers, musicians, mathematicians, professors, students – we need people that represent the whole world because this is about the whole world and the people who live here. We have to do something and we can do it. That’s why we want to join together in this Climate Action Summit in 2018 in San Francisco.

Yes, I know President Trump is trying to get out of the Paris Agreement, but he doesn’t speak for the rest of America. We in California and in states all across America believe it’s time to act, it’s time to join together and that’s why at this Climate Action Summit we’re going to get it done.

So, see you there. Thanks.”

In 2019 ALL Volvo Cars Will Be Electric

Battery Electric Pure. Phot credit: Volvo Cars

Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has announced that every Volvo it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor, marking the historic end of cars that only have an internal combustion engine (ICE) and placing electrification at the core of its future business. It makes Volvo THE FIRST car maker to go all electric.

The announcement represents one of the most significant moves by any car maker to embrace electrification and highlights how over a century after the invention of the internal combustion engine electrification is paving the way for a new chapter in automotive history.

“This is about the customer,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”

Volvo Cars will introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range, embracing fully electric cars, plug in hybrid cars and mild hybrid cars.

It will launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance car arm. Full details of these models will be announced at a later date.

These five cars will be supplemented by a range of petrol and diesel plug in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options on all models, representing one of the broadest electrified car offerings of any car maker.

This means that there will in future be no Volvo cars without an electric motor, as pure ICE cars are gradually phased out and replaced by ICE cars that are enhanced with electrified options.

“This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car,” said Mr Samuelsson. “Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of 1m electrified cars by 2025. When we said it we meant it. This is how we are going to do it.”

The announcement underlines Volvo Cars’ commitment to minimizing its environmental impact and making the cities of the future cleaner. Volvo Cars is focused on reducing the carbon emissions of both its products as well as its operations. It aims to have climate neutral manufacturing operations by 2025.

The decision also follows this month’s announcement that Volvo Cars will turn Polestar into a new separately-branded electrified global high performance car company. Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars, will lead Polestar as Chief Executive Officer.

Mayor Garcetti Sworn In For Second Term

Mayor Garcetti Sworn In for Second Term: “We Will Build a City That Throws Open Every Door Ever Shut on a Hope or a Dream”

On July 2nd 2017, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was sworn in for the second term. Mayor Eric Garcetti laid out his vision to expand hope, prosperity, and opportunity to every corner of Los Angeles, as he swore the oath of office on the steps of City Hall for the second time.

City Attorney Mike Feuer, City Controller Ron Galperin, and eight members of the City Council were inaugurated on the same day. Mayor Garcetti was sworn in by his mother, Sukey Garcetti, who was flanked by First Lady Amy Elaine Wakeland and their daughter, Maya.

“We know … the future is already here. We must decide whether our whole city will own its share of that future, or whether we will watch it pass us by while our greater number watches from behind a glass,” said Mayor Garcetti. “We decide, here, now, and walking forward, whether that future will be offered to one in a million with a lottery ticket, or whether every child growing up here will know it is her birthright. We must connect. We must succeed — at sustaining middle class jobs, at strengthening education, at protecting our environment while growing our economy — because right now, it’s on us to show the way forward.”

This evening’s ceremony, witnessed by thousands of Angelenos who gathered on Spring Street, marks the official beginning of Mayor Garcetti’s second term as mayor. He won reelection on March 7 with a record-setting 81% of the vote.

The Mayor’s second term comes after four years of extraordinary economic growth across Los Angeles. He began his first term by navigating the City through the end of the Great Recession with ambitious steps that helped to bring billions of dollars of investment to the City, create nearly 160,000 new jobs, and slash the unemployment rate in half.

Mayor Garcetti has also taken visionary action to bring long-term prosperity to Los Angeles. He led the campaigns to pass Measure M and Proposition HHH — two of the boldest housing and infrastructure measures in American history — raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour, developed the City’s first ever Sustainable City pLAn, brought the historic Lucas Museum of Narrative Art to Exposition Park, and has carried Los Angeles to the brink of hosting a third Olympic Games.

In his second term, Mayor Garcetti will build on that success, and continue to confront L.A.’s most difficult challenges. He will work to end the City’s homelessness and affordable housing crises, and continue the effort to make Los Angeles safer, and more prosperous for all Angelenos.

The Mayor will also focus on implementing the plans and initiatives set forth during his first term. He will make sure that the funding voters approved with Measure M and Proposition HHH is invested in housing and transportation projects as quickly and effectively as possible; continue working to create good-paying jobs, and strengthen the middle class; and expand successful programs like Hire L.A.’s Youth, which he has already grown threefold since taking office.

The inauguration program celebrated Los Angeles with L.A.-centric performances by Boyle Heights native George Takei; KCRW’s Jason Bentley; singer Angel Joy Blue; UCLA’s Thelonious Monk Jazz Institute Ensemble; and the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Travel Ban, Voter Rolls, Women And Media

Highlights of an eventful week: from the President’s attack on Mika Brzezinski to the fake video in which he pummels CNN reporter

It’s been yet another eventful week, the Republican – and atrocious! – healthcare plan not withstanding:

The still unconstitutional but revised travel ban went into effect. The latest version – partially approved by the Supreme Court – is supposed to keep us safe at the cost of separating families from their grandparents and discriminating against refugees from extreme Islamism who – having been granted political asylum years ago – made America their home. Refugees from extreme Islamism – many of whom are American citizens for a generation or two – are our best allies in the war against terror. Treating them like “terrorists” is counterproductive, to say the least.

The federal government requested that States turn over their voter rolls to confirm the President’s unfounded belief that dead people and illegal aliens cast fraudulent votes for Hillary Clinton during the last Presidential Election and he – President Trump – has in fact received the majority of legitimate votes. Several States – including California – denied the request. While many people glanced over the news, those familiar with history – and the fact that it tends to repeat itself! – were alarmed. Voter rolls contain detailed, personally identifiable information, including the political affiliation of every voter. Sharing such information could potentially facilitate the re-birth of McCarthyism and blacklisting…. (Incidentally, no significant evidence of voter fraud in 2016 Presidential Election was reported by any State.)

As if the above wasn’t disturbing enough, President Trump grows ever more outrageous on Twitter.

First, the President took aim at Mika Brzezinski, the co-host of MSNBC’s weekday Morning Joe. Just as he’s tried with Megyn Kelly (former corporate attorney, and currently, a journalist and political commentator), President Trump attempted to discredit Brzezinski’s intellect (she is a visiting fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics in the Harvard Kennedy School of Government), demean her as a person and humiliate her as a woman. Predictably, the President’s behavior drew outrage and criticism from both sides of the aisle.

President Trump’s contempt for the media in general was further emphasized in a “doctored” video he released in which he “makes believe” to knock-out a CNN reporter. The President posted the fake video on his Twitter account. Since we have witnessed how President Trump’s inflammatory speeches incite white extremist violence, the video doesn’t bode well for American journalists. (Let’s not forget that the responsibility of journalists is to inform the public. Not that long ago, while American youth was protesting against the federal government, two journalists saved the Country from a “corrupt” president. They used their investigative reporting skills to provide evidence of his wrong-doing. The massive protests didn’t save us. Two journalists did.) Journalism is any country’s last line of defense from a corrupt / abusive government….

Finally, on Sunday the latest protests took place in Los Angeles. President Trump’s supporters and a larger group speaking for the majority of Angelenos took to the streets. Among the creative signs carried by the marchers were: “Make America SANE, again.” and “Impeach Trump: Make America great, again.”

And how was YOUR week?

With the 4th of July approaching, we wish you a happy and restful holiday. As for the celebration of our Independence many are worried (see the tweets below) that it is being threatened as we speak…

Why are we standing idly by while our morals, norms - not to mention, ideals - are being publicly violated?! Is this some lousy production of Emperor's New Clothes? We can all see that the "emperor" is naked and no one enjoys the view. Let's reign in the rampant insanity already. Enough.

At what point do we draw a line?
