If You’re Given Immunity

The man who said of aides to Hillary Clinton “If you are given immunity that means you’ve probably committed a crime” is himself seeking immunity as a condition for testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee! Yes, we’re talking about General Mike Flynn, the retired Lt. Gen., not-registered agent for a foreign government, ex-head of the Defense Intelligence Agency and for a whole 3 weeks President Trump’s national security advisor. (He was eventually fired for allegedly misleading Vice President Mike Pence about his – Flynn’s! – communications with Russia.)

According to Robert Kelner, Flynn’s attorney, “General Flynn certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it.”

If General Flynn believes that only criminals request – and are given – immunity as he stated while speaking with Chuck Todd on Meet the Press, one has to wonder what self-incriminating story he has to tell… Stay tuned: the investigation of Trump campaign’s possible ties to Russia is just beginning while the confusion over House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes highly unusual behavior still simmers.

California To Improve Its Transportation Infrastructure

League of California Cities® Commends Governor, Senate Pro Tem, Speaker of the Assembly and Transportation Committee Chairs on Agreement to Provide Historic Investment in California’s Transportation System

The $5.2 billion transportation funding and accountability agreement announced today by Gov. Jerry Brown, Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) represents the hard work of Sen. Jim Beall (D-San Jose) and Assembly Member Jim Frazier (D-Oakley), chairs of their respective houses’ transportation committees, who have championed the need to provide new investment in the transportation system. The Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 is a significant investment in California’s transportation infrastructure and if passed by the Legislature will provide the funding necessary to start repairing the state and local road system. California’s streets and roads face a $73 billion backlog of maintenance needs.

League President and Lodi City Council Member JoAnne Mounce commended the leadership and determination shown by the Governor, Senate President pro Tem and Speaker of the Assembly. “After years of discussion, debate and negotiation on transportation, our Governor and legislative leaders have made monumental progress with the crafting of this agreement. Their commitment in making transportation a priority and coming together on the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 will have a lasting impact on Californians for generations. The League and the cities of California are ready to get to work on our streets and begin fixing many years of deferred maintenance.”

“Californians are sick and tired of driving on bad roads and we are all paying the cost of disrepair, traffic congestion and unsafe roads, bridges and other transportation infrastructure,” said League Executive Director Carolyn Coleman. “We want to thank the Governor and Legislative leaders and encourage all members of the legislature to pass this responsible plan by April 6.”

The League and the California State Association of Counties, along with the County Engineers Association of California and California Regional Transportation Planning Agencies, have since 2008 released the biennial California Statewide Local Streets and Roads Needs Assessment, which surveys California’s 58 counties and 482 cities and captures data from more than 99 percent of the state’s local streets and roads. The most recent report, released in October 2016, documented the $73 billion backlog and found that 65 percent of streets and roads are at risk. Without additional funding, in 10 years it is projected that 22 percent of local streets and roads will be in failed condition.

The League has been working with the Fix Our Roads Coalition since its formation to advance funding solutions to California’s transportation funding crisis. Formed in 2015, the coalition comprises a large group of transportation stakeholders including cities, counties, business, labor and transportation advance solutions to the transportation funding challenge.

Established in 1898, the League of California Cities is a nonprofit statewide association that advocates for cities with the state and federal governments and provides education and training services to elected and appointed city officials.

*

No one can argue that California’s roads, streets, highways and bridges are in a state of disrepair. It’s no wonder, considering that most of them were built between 1950 and 1970. I addition, we commute and travel heavily and not maintaining the transportation infrastructure the way it should be. Obviously, extensive repairs and significant improvements are needed.

The Road Repair and Accountability Act is sound and necessary. What’s at issue is the financing of the plan which is expected to hit all California drivers in the pocket and heavily so raising $5.2 billion a year for 10 years. How? By hiking up registration fees, levying usage fees on electric and hybrid vehicles, increasing taxes on gas and diesel….

California Legislature is expected to vote on the proposed $5.2 billion Road Repair and Accountability Act as early as next week.

Mayor Garcetti Defends L.A.

Mayor Garcetti on the President’s Executive Order to roll back federal climate action

“President Trump’s moves today to undo the Clean Power Plan and roll back other key climate policies undermine the important efforts — throughout the country and the world — to tackle the single greatest threat and economic opportunity of our time: climate change. I asked 37 of my fellow ‘climate mayors’ to join me in writing President Trump to object to his actions, including severe proposed budget cuts to the EPA and clean energy programs like Energy Star at the U.S. Department of Energy, and rollbacks to vehicle fuel efficiency standards. The administration is taking clear steps to undermine not only the federal government’s commitment to meeting the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, but also U.S. leadership on public health and growing the clean energy economy.

“No matter what happens in Washington, we will work to meet our Sustainable City pLAn goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050, move toward zero emissions transportation, and pursue our vision of a 100% clean energy future. Los Angeles has also divested from the coal-fired Navajo Generating Station, and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will be completely coal-free by 2025.

“Nothing can stop us from investing in electric cars and mass transit; from ending our reliance on coal; from installing cool roofs and pavement; or from leading America in solar power. Los Angeles will uphold the obligation to preserve the health of our planet, protect our most vulnerable residents, and create a 21st century economy — and working with my fellow ‘climate mayors,’ we will continue doing our part to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement in cities across the country.” — Mayor Eric Garcetti

Mayor Garcetti is the co-founder of the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda (MNCAA), a network of 75 U.S. “climate mayors” representing 41 million Americans — working together to strengthen local efforts for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting efforts for binding federal and global-level policymaking. Earlier this year, Mayor Garcetti led the release of an EV RFI with 30 MNCAA cities to demonstrate potential demand for over 110,000 electric vehicles, trucks, and equipment for cities. Mayor Garcetti is also Vice Chair of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, an international network of the world’s megacities taking action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and he has signed the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.

LA City Attorney Warns Against Immigration Fraud

CITY ATTORNEY FEUER LAUNCHES PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN AGAINST IMMIGRATION CONSULTANT SCAMS, SUPPORTS LEGISLATION TO LICENSE NOTARIOS

In the wake of increased action by Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officers, City Attorney Mike Feuer today announced a multi-agency collaboration to educate the public on immigration consultants and to crack down on those who misrepresent the services they may provide under the law. As part of this effort, the City Attorney supports legislation proposed by City Councilwoman Nury Martinez to establish a permitting and enforcement system for immigration consultants.

“Immigration fraud schemes can have devastating and long-lasting impacts on families,” said Feuer. “It’s especially important now, at a time of heightened anxiety in our immigrant communities, to prevent residents who turn to immigration consultants out of desperation from being victimized. My office will continue to work closely with our partners on the City Council and the County to safeguard families’ dreams and hold accountable those who would prey on immigrants’ fears.”

“During such uncertain times, it is unfathomable that people would take advantage of Angelenos who are just trying to take care of their families,” said Councilwoman Nury Martinez. “By establishing a license for immigration consultants, we will be doing two things: Providing a resource of legitimate consultants for people to access; and giving the City the tools necessary to prevent more people from being victimized. Our number one goal must continue to be to protect families in Los Angeles.”

“It is unfortunate that at a time when some of our most vulnerable Angelenos seek immigration advice, they find themselves victims of notario fraud and immigration consultant scams,” stated Councilmember Gil Cedillo. “I thank City Attorney Mike Feuer for his leadership and educational campaign, and Councilwoman Nury Martinez for her motion to regulate notarios in the City of Los Angeles. People’s lives are at stake especially under the Presidency of Donald Trump, and anyone seeking to profit from these misfortunes should be ashamed of themselves,” added Cedillo.

“Fraudulent immigration consultants and ‘notarios’ take advantage of the most vulnerable residents in Los Angeles County,” said County of Los Angeles Department of Consumer and Business Affairs Director Brian J. Stiger. “We stand together with City Attorney Mike Feuer and other partners to fight all types of fraud affecting immigrants.”

The motion, presented by Councilmember Martinez and supported by Feuer and Cedillo, calls for the development of an immigration consultant licensing process through the Office of Finance that will monitor and identify consultants as well as fund investigations. Enforcement and citation of businesses not in compliance with the law would be done by the City Attorney in coordination with the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (LACBCA). The motion would also require all immigration consultants and notaries to comply with all provisions of the California Immigration Consultant Act in order to curb immigration services fraud.

Under current regulations, immigration consultants are not lawyers and have a very limited and specific role in helping someone complete the process to change their immigration status. The limited services immigration consultants can offer include completing immigration forms but can’t tell consumers which forms they need, translating answers without advising consumers what answers to provide, securing supporting documents, submitting forms and making free referrals to licensed attorneys.

The City Attorney and LACBCA have partnered to enforce current laws governing immigration consultants. There are currently several referrals from LACBCA that the City Attorney is reviewing. There is also an ongoing case against Eddie Bonilla, a notario, set for trial next week that alleges violations of unlicensed practice of immigration law that was investigated by LADCBA.

Immigration consultants must give customers a written contract, in English and in the consumer’s language that gives customers a three-day right to cancel it without any charge. Immigration consultants must also post signs to make it clear that they are not licensed attorneys, and they must tell customers that they can’t provide legal advice.

Support for new legislation calling for licensing of consultants is part of an ongoing and comprehensive enforcement and education campaign spearheaded by City Attorney Feuer, the LA County Department of Business and Consumer Affairs, and legal aid organizations to address immigration scams. Individuals who believe they have been a victim of immigration scams should contact the DCBA at (800) 593-8222, or file a complaint DCBA’s website: www.dcba.lacounty.gov.

Consumers can find additional tips and information on the City Attorney’s website http://www.lacityattorney.org/immigration-fraud, and on DCBA’s website: www.dcba.lacounty.gov.

Adam Krief With His Wife

Adam Krief With His Wife in happy times

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Adam Krief’s passing. He was young, successful and happy, with an entire life ahead of him. He became stricken with a unique form of leukemia and could have been saved by a matching – not even bone marrow, but blood – donation. Thousands of people wanted to help and have been tested for compatibility. Adam Krief was undergoing chemotherapy for several months while waiting and hoping for a matching donor.

All attempts at saving Adam failed. He leaves behind a wife and three young children as well as his parents, other family members and many friends. Anything L.A. Liberal Magazine stands with Adam Krief’s loved ones in their grief.

*

If you recall, Anything LA – together with One Human Community – stepped up and attempted to help in finding a matching donor for Adam Krief.

You can read more here:

MANY others did, too. This somber occasion is not the time for personal grievances, but based on our first-hand experience: should someone you love find themselves in a situation like Adam’s, PAY MONEY for the compatibility test, encourage family and friends to PAY. Don’t ask why, that’s what we concluded from a first-hand experience. We have no comment beyond this LIFE-SAVING advice.

Rest in peace Adam….

Tribute To Debbie And Carrie

The public memorial for Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher was scheduled for 1 pm but a line of people eager to attend it formed at Forest Lawn at 7 am. Fans of both stars came from the Greater Los Angeles area as well as from other California cities and out of state.

Carrie Fisher (60) died on December 27th 2016 after suffering a heart attack on a flight from London days earlier. She is beloved for her role as Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” trilogy (original). She was also a best-selling author (her Postcards From The Edge became a box office hit starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine).

Her mother Debbie Reynolds (84) died just one day later from a stroke. She was a star from the Hollywood’s Golden Era, making her mark as a consummate performer on the big screen in “Singin’ in the Rain” first. Her successful career spanned many decades.

The public memorial for his mother and sister was organized by Todd Fisher who said: “My mother didn’t like funerals and memorials. She liked shows.” And he created a Hollywood production for them both: filled with intimate memories, fan favorites and a lot of love.

The memorial featured private family photos, videos, musical and dance tributes, even an appearance by R2D2. Dan Aykroyd and Ruta Lee spoke about the stars. John Williams’ music was played. James Blunt’s tribute song to Carrie Fisher moved all present. Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles was stirring. A dynamic performance of “Singin’ in the Rain” brought back memories. At the center of the ceremony – of course – were Debbie and Carrie: their lives, successes and contributions which were remembered and honored.

The public memorial for the two Hollywood legends concluded with a walk to Forest Lawn’s Courts of Remembrance where mother and daughter are buried together.

Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher are gone. Each left behind a remarkable legacy as an artist and as a human being. During and after the memorial many said that Carrie Fisher coped with her bipolar disorder with dignity and grace; she was a voice for others suffering from the disease. In real life, Debbie Reynolds was no less than the Unsinkable Molly Brown. No wonder the program for the public memorial was imprinted with Natalie Babbitt’s quote: “Don’t be afraid of death, be afraid of an un-lived life.” They both lived: survived and achieved. Our memories of them and their work survive them.

Obamacare Remains The Law

Common sense along with pressure from constituents prevailed and the Affordable Care Act was NOT repealed. All Democrats and at least 10 Republicans (the latter figure varies from 10-15 according to reports) were ready to vote the new and not improved Republican healthcare bill down. To avoid the embarrassment of defeat, the bill was withdrawn from the House floor even before votes were cast.

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said: “Obamacare is the law of the land. It’s going to remain the law of the land until it’s replaced.” Or not. A sigh of bipartisan relief was heard throughout the land….

The proposed Republican bill would have left 24 million Americans uninsured. The costs of health insurance would have risen sharply for all and for senior citizens in particular. It would have hurt badly women, families, those with chronic conditions and those who depend for their healthcare on Medicaid. The list goes on and on. Obamacare may use some improvement, but as President Trump has proven, a program that took years to develop can’t be “repealed and replaced” quickly and his proposed substitute was rejected by Americans who know that the job of any head of household is to provide for ALL household members, putting the most vulnerable, FIRST.

Hopefully, the President is learning from his latest failure: a country isn’t a corporation. The CEO of a corporation generates as much profit as possible for its shareholders at ANY cost. The responsibility of a president – in contrast – is to provide for all citizens, including the most vulnerable. Governing a country isn’t “The Art Of The Deal”, it involves conscience, compassion and some respect for the wisdom of the nation.

So far, the President isn’t making friends or influencing people. Our ally nations are confused about the intentions (and direction) of the United States. The President’s approval ratings are at a historic low. His legislative efforts (like the infamous travel ban or Obamacare “repeal and replace”) are failing. The President’s ignorance (NATO!) and predatory approach to economy (the Dakota Pipeline construction which is moving forward against so many protests) are on full display. His lavish spending of tax-payers money is raising eyebrows. His lack of fiscal foresight is shocking: between the unprecedented cost of the President’s weekends and security for his large family, his excessive spending on defense and the cost of building the wall – it is estimated to run into hundreds of billions of dollars! – has anyone familiar with the concept of a budget, terrified. His plans to cut programs for youth, the poor and the elderly outrage us all. His exaggerations, “alternative facts” and unsubstantiated allegations are making Americans nervous.

Let’s NOT make America great, again. Let’s preserve what we had just a few months ago. It seems not only better but wiser than the President Trump’s vision of the future. Definitions of ”greatness” vary. Our America won’t be great without education, with starving seniors, sick people without healthcare, with environmental destruction, hate crime, isolationism, increase in armament or without civil rights. This isn’t making America great again. The America we all know and love is threatened and disappearing in front of our eyes. Thanks God, Obamacare survived, for now….

Terror In London

A lone individual suspected of having ties to terrorism killed four and injured forty in a brazen attack in London on Wednesday, March 22nd 2017.

The suspected terrorist – unnamed as of now – sped over the Westminster Bridge in a Hyundai, subsequently jumped the pavement and mowed down pedestrians. Then the vehicle veered and hit the British Parliament’s perimeter wall. The driver rushed out of the car and run into the New Palace Yard where he brutally stabbed to death British parliamentary and diplomatic protection command officer, Keith Palmer. Eventually the attacker was shot and killed by other armed officers. Many of the injured are in serious condition.

In a statement, U.K. Prime Minister, Theresa May said:

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been affected – to the victims themselves, and their family and friends who waved their loved ones off, but will not now be welcoming them home.
For those of us who were in Parliament at the time of this attack, these events provide a particular reminder of the exceptional bravery of our police and security services who risk their lives to keep us safe.
Once again today, these exceptional men and women ran towards the danger even as they encouraged others to move the other way.
On behalf of the whole country, I want to pay tribute to them – and to all our emergency services – for the work they have been doing to reassure the public and bring security back to the streets of our Capital City.
That they have lost one of their own in today’s attack only makes their calmness and professionalism under pressure all the more remarkable.
The location of this attack was no accident. The terrorists chose to strike at the heart of our Capital City, where people of all nationalities, religions and cultures come together to celebrate the values of liberty, democracy and freedom of speech.
These streets of Westminster – home to the world’s oldest Parliament – are engrained with a spirit of freedom that echoes in some of the furthest corners of the globe. And the values our Parliament represents – democracy, freedom, human rights, the rule of law – command the admiration and respect of free people everywhere.”

“Tomorrow morning, Parliament will meet as normal. We will come together as normal.”

“And we will all move forward together. Never giving in to terror. And never allowing the voices of hate and evil to drive us apart.”

Identities of the three civilian victims have not been made public, yet. The slain officer, Keith Palmer, 48, was a husband and father with 15 years of service on the force.

Greater Manchester Police chief constable Ian Hopkins said: “RIP PC Keith Palmer, brutally murdered today carrying out his duty helping to protect parliament and the freedom of our country.”

A violent attack on innocent people and a historic institution (the British Parliament which represents the best of our civilization) by a barbarian – whether inspired by terrorism or not – is an attack on us all. We stand in solidarity with United Kingdom’s citizens in their grief and outrage.

UPDATE: British police named 52-year-old – born in Kent – Khalid Masoodas as the perpetrator of the attack. (Masoodas had a criminal record and several convictions for prior violent crimes. The full extent of his involvement with organized terrorism is being investigated.) Authorities have arrested eight others in connection with the mayhem.

As we now know among the killed were one American (a husband on a 25th wedding anniversary trip to England with his wife) and a teacher from Spain who was a wife and a mother.

It is heart-breaking that private individuals (four!) without any political agenda have been killed (and forty seriously injured!) by an English-born, known criminal who may have been “inspired” by terrorism…. He didn’t advance any “cause”. He devastated families.

WE CONDEMN ALL HATE CRIMES!

Los Angeles Supports Immigrant Communities

Mayor Garcetti leads more than 60 mayors in ‘Cities’ Day of Immigration Action’

Los Angeles coordinates nationwide, bipartisan effort to inform and empower immigrant communities

Mayor Eric Garcetti today led the first-ever Cities’ Day of Immigration Action, an effort by mayors in more than 60 cities to mobilize law enforcement, faith leaders, legal advocates, and community organizations in affirming the indispensable role of immigrants in American life, and connecting people with the resources they need to protect themselves and their families.

“Immigration is at the heart of the American story, because people from everywhere have made immeasurable contributions to the diversity, ingenuity, and cultural richness that defines who we are. That is especially true in Los Angeles, and people who have made a home here deserve all of the resources and protection their City can provide,” said Mayor Garcetti, who chairs and founded the United States Conference of Mayors Latino Alliance. “No one in Los Angeles should live in fear of being taken from their home, or separated from their family. I will never stop fighting to protect all Angelenos, and making sure they are given the support they need and deserve.”

In Los Angeles, the Cities’ Day of Immigration Action was highlighted by Mayor Garcetti signing the twentieth executive directive of his administration. The directive, “Standing with Immigrants: A City of Safety, Refuge, and Opportunity for All,” ensures that L.A.’s public servants stay focused on protecting people, serving communities, and saving lives — not inquiring about immigration status or engaging in federal civil immigration enforcement.

The directive expands existing LAPD policies on immigration enforcement to Airport police, Port police and firefighters — and prohibits all city employees from using public facilities or resources to assist or cooperate with federal civil immigration enforcement. It also requires that every city facility and service be made available to all Angelenos without regard to citizenship or immigration status, and orders protections on the confidentiality of information submitted by residents who enroll in city programs and services, unless required by law.

Los Angeles also hosted citywide legal clinics, “Know Your Rights” workshops, and training sessions throughout the day — giving Angelenos a chance to ask questions, and get answers, about immigration processing. Mayor Garcetti met with pro bono legal service providers at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), and hosted a ‘Know Your Rights’ workshop at the Dolores Mission with immigration advocates, law enforcement officials, and faith and community leaders.

The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs has issued a Community Resource Guide for immigrant Angelenos — which includes comprehensive know-your-rights information and resources, including contact information for legal service providers and community organizations. The guide can be found at LAMayor.org/KnowYourRights.

Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti said on Instagram: “We are reminding our immigrant communities: We see you. We support you. You are welcome here. And we will do everything in our power to keep you safe.”

Anything L.A.’s comment: Hats off to City of Los Angeles and its Leaders for putting human rights, first!

For more information about the Cities’ Day of Immigration Action in Los Angeles, please visit LAMayor.org/Immigrants. To see the list of more than 60 Mayors and cities participating in 32 states across America, go to http://www.usmayors.org/mayors-stand-for-all/immigration/.

L.A. Local State of Emergency

Photo property of LADWP

Mayor Garcetti declares State of Emergency to address unprecedented snowmelt in the Owens Valley

LADWP must act quickly to protect communities and critical infrastructure along the L.A. Aqueduct from flooding.

Mayor Eric Garcetti has declared a local State of Emergency to protect the lands and communities near the Los Angeles Aqueduct from flooding, as this year’s historic Eastern Sierra snowpack begins to melt into the Owens Valley.

This year’s snowpack in the Eastern Sierras is 241% above normal, and once spring sets in, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) expects the snowmelt to send up to 1 million acre-feet of runoff into the Owens Valley.

This runoff — nearly twice the amount of water Angelenos use in a year — will likely threaten local communities, hydroelectric power plants, and dust mitigation infrastructure in Owens Lake with destructive flooding. Mayor Garcetti’s Emergency Declaration will trigger City rules that enable LADWP to act quickly in response to the threat, and begin the process of requesting assistance from the state and federal governments.

“I am declaring a local State of Emergency today because we have a responsibility to protect Angelenos and the people of the Owens Valley — we must act quickly to address this threat,” said Mayor Garcetti. “I have also requested that Governor Brown help us coordinate our response with state agencies.”

“This emergency reminds us that climate change is not a problem for the distant future — it is already causing harm, and we know there is more to come. That’s why it’s critical for us to continue investing in infrastructure that makes our City more sustainable and resilient, and continue pushing to reduce our carbon emissions,” he added.

Mayor Garcetti is committed to making the City more sustainable, and combating climate change. His administration’s Sustainable City pLAn outlines ambitious goals for water conservation, carbon emission reduction, climate resiliency, and expanding the use of renewable energy. This historic snowpack directly after a historic drought is an example of the extreme climate patterns modeled in many climate studies.

Today’s Emergency Proclamation will help LADWP respond to the immediate threat of flooding in the Owens Valley by triggering special City rules that enable the utility to contract for the goods and services it needs more quickly. Since it is intended to last longer than seven days, the declaration requires approval by the City Council.

LADWP is already taking steps to prepare for this year’s snowmelt, and Mayor Garcetti’s declaration will enable the utility to act more quickly. For example, the agency is spreading water along the length of the L.A. Aqueduct system — so that the excess water can be used to replenish underground aquifers — and maximizing flows throughout the system, using more Aqueduct water to supply Los Angeles. It is also shoring up existing flood control infrastructure and emptying reservoirs along the Aqueduct to prepare for the snowmelt and protect its hydroelectric power plants and critical endangered species habitat from flooding.

In Owens Lake where the City has spent more than $1 billion on dust mitigation over the last two decades, LADWP is building new infrastructure to guide the flow of excess runoff away from its dust control operations and prevent them from destruction.

“Public safety is among our core values as an organization,” said LADWP General Manager David H. Wright. “LADWP has made a commitment to the residents of the Owens Valley to control dust emissions that can be harmful to breathe, and have spent over $1 billion on infrastructure to mitigate this dust. As storm waters threaten to destroy much of this investment, we must honor our commitment to the residents of the Owens Valley to reduce this form of air pollution, just like we honor our commitments to rate payers in the L.A. Basin. This Declaration by Mayor Garcetti today allows us to bypass lengthy supply procurement regulations to ensure that we can immediately continue to keep particulate matter from being blown off the dry lake playa during periods of high winds.”

Chuck Berry Rock N Roll Legend Died

Chuck Berry, the legend of rock n roll died at the age of 90. His songs such as “Johnny B. Goode”, “Roll Over Beethoven”, “Rock and Roll Music”, “School Day”, “Maybellene” and his greatest hit “My Ding-a-Ling” are the heart and soul of Rock and Roll.

Brilliant guitarist who invented his signature “two-stringed lick”, Chuck Berry was a prolific songwriter (not constrained by a specific genre but effortlessly combing them) and consummate performer.

Chuck Berry’s life had its ups and downs.

Born Charles Edward Anderson Berry on Oct. 18th 1926 in St. Louis, Berry grew up in segregated Missouri. Caught for armed robbery and car theft, he spent three years in a reform school. Consequently, Berry earned a degree in cosmetology and hairdressing, got married and became a father of four children. For a while he supported his family as a beautician.

In his spare time Berry played music and performed whenever and wherever possible. Even when his musical career took off, his legal troubles didn’t stop. He was charged with a sex crime and drug possession and served a brief stint (20 months) in prison. At the height of his successful career Berry performed at the White House for President Jimmy Carter. Only three days later, he was convicted for tax evasion, sentenced to four years probation and 120 days in federal prison!

Chuck Berry’s music carried him through every storm. It inspired love of his fans and respect – as well as envy – of his peers. The Rolling Stones released an album of Berry’s songs, while The Beach Boys misappropriated his “Sweet Little Sixteen” (to be specific, they turned it into “Surfin’ U.S.A.” without giving Berry due credit for which he sued them and succeeded). Even the Beatles re-imagined his “Rock and Roll Music” and “Roll Over Beethoven”…. This was the impact of Chuck Berry’s music on his fellow artists in the 1960s. And he performed with the best of them for decades: well into his 80s!

This brief tribute to Chuck Berry would be incomplete if we didn’t mention that his achievements were recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 1984 and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Berry received other awards and recognitions, but one of the greatest honors he received is the inclusion of “Johnny B. Goode” on the NASA playlist within the Voyager I and II spacecraft still traveling in space.

But no matter how one would attempt to describe his life or his art, only Chuck Berry’s music can convey the essence of the artist: have a listen!

Congratulations to ALL participants of the Los Angeles Marathon!

Many contributed to the overall success of the 2017 Los Angeles Marathon.

Starting with the official sponsor, The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon was proud to host the city’s newest professional sports team, the LA Chargers, who participated in this year’s race by running their own 13-person relay. LA Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman, General Manager Tom Telesco, Chargers’ Cheerleaders and Super Fans made up the team that partook in the marathon festivities and journey from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica.

The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon teamed up with Guinness World Records to give athletes the opportunity to attempt an official Guinness World Records title, with on-the-day record verification at the race.

Skechers Performance returned in 2017 as the official title sponsor of the race, with new activations and a limited-edition footwear and apparel collection that encapsulates the city. The brand is also launching the GOrun Forza 2 “FO SHO” sneaker model in a very limited release – which was only available at the Skechers Performance official race merchandise booth at the official Health & Fitness Expo – which plays up Los Angeles themes with bright graphics highlighting iconic landmarks and imagery from the city.

Once again, the 2017 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon app powered by Fitbit delivered a best-in-class experience that allowed runners, spectators and the entire Los Angeles community easy access to race information, the course map and social media tools that enhanced their experience with this iconic race.

Through an unprecedented partnership with Snapchat, runners and spectators at the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon had a unique way to commemorate their experiences on social media by using more than 40 on-demand Snapchat Geofilters specially-designed for the race.

The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon supported 95 charity partners through its Official Charity Program, offering them the opportunity to leverage the world-class endurance event to increase awareness and raise funds for their causes.

Conqur Endurance Group (the organizer of L.A. Marathon) continued its support of the Students Run LA program, which provides at-risk high school students with mentors and coaching to train for the race throughout the school year. During the 28-year partnership with SRLA, the marathon organizer has provided 6.5 million dollars’ worth of free marathon entries to local high school students in the Students Run LA program. This year too, Conqur Endurance Group supported SRLA with 3,500 free marathon entries for students and mentors.

2017 Los Angeles Marathon – like the many before – was a huge success as a competitive sport event but maybe even more so as a social event that brought Los Angeles together for fun and celebration and made a positive impact on our City’s future.

CONVICTION IN LGBT CENTER HATE CRIME

CITY ATTORNEY FEUER SECURES CONVICTION IN LGBT CENTER HATE CRIME VANDALISM CASE

City Attorney Mike Feuer announced that his office has successfully secured a conviction and jail sentence against a graffiti vandal for damaging a Los Angeles LGBT Center facility with hate speech.

“In these increasingly precarious times, it’s particularly important that my office stand at the forefront in protecting all our residents against acts of violence and hate,” said Feuer.

“We will not tolerate hate or bullying of any form. Los Angeles is and will continue to be a place of refuge for all. I commend the City Attorney’s office for their work prosecuting this case and protecting our residents.” Said Councilmember David Ryu.

“Messages of hate and violence will not be tolerated in the City of Los Angeles,” said Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, who is openly gay and shares representation of the Los Angeles LGBT Center in Hollywood. “I commend our City Attorney for taking swift action regarding this crime, and for working with my office to create an environment where our diversity is celebrated and one’s truth is respected.”

“This hateful incident was not an isolated event,” said Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO Lorri L. Jean. “There has been a rash of similar incidents targeting LGBT centers nationwide. We are living in a very different climate—when LGBT people, Muslim people, Jewish people and others are increasingly under attack—but we must remain resilient. We’re grateful to the Los Angeles Police Department and to City Attorney Mike Feuer.”

Damario Brown, 23, was charged on March 13, 2017 with one count each of hate crime damaging property and vandalism. The defendant pled open to the charges on March 14, 2017 and was sentenced to 36 months of probation, nine days in jail, 45 days of graffiti removal and was ordered to stay away from the Center. A restitution hearing is scheduled for April 27, 2017.

On February 9, 2017, the Center’s Director of Facilities reported an unidentified individual had spray painted the phrase “F–k Trannies,” among other slurs, on the front facing wall of the Center’s Village at Ed Gould Plaza located at 1125 N. McCadden Place. Defendant Brown was identified by officers after recognizing him on surveillance video at the location and was arrested on March 9, 2017.

Deputy City Attorney Chadd Kim of the City Attorney’s Special Trials Unit successfully prosecuted the case.

Former Sheriff Lee Baca Found Guilty

Former Sheriff Lee Baca (right) with then-Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa

Jurors found the former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca guilty of obstructing a federal investigation and then lying to cover-up his involvement in corruption, civil rights violations and inmate abuse in L.A. County jails. (It took the jurors less than two days of deliberations to render their decision.)

A total of 10 people – all former employees of Sheriff Lee Baca – have either been convicted already or pled guilty in connection with the case. Former Sheriff Lee Baca is believed to have organized, controlled, supervised and covered-up the crimes while pragmatically obstructing FBI’s investigation.

Today 74 and allegedly afflicted with early symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, Baca disclaims any responsibility. Luckily, no one – including former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca – is above the law, his excuses not withstanding. Abuse of power should never go unpunished.

Sentencing is scheduled for this coming Monday. Baca is expected to appeal.
