Mollie Lowery Los Angeles Mother Theresa

Mollie Lowery: Los Angeles Mother Theresa

Only one day after Mayor Eric Garcetti announced new effort to combat homelessness In L.A., a long time advocate for the homeless, mentally-ill and destitute, Mollie Lowery passed away.

Mollie Lowery left a long list of accomplishments behind. (She co-created the Los Angeles Men’s Program for mentally-ill homeless men, HousingWorks, and more.) However those who knew her well know that her greatest legacy are the individuals whom she’s helped to reclaim their lives: the formerly homeless, formerly poor, formerly ill, formerly addicted or altogether, formerly lost.

Just like Mother Theresa, Mollie Lowery didn’t seek public accolades. She cared, she served and tirelessly so. Her compassion for fellow human beings compelled her to organize walking tours of the Sierra Nevada Mountains especially for the homeless, believing that Nature replenishes human spirit………

Many believe that birth – the act of giving life – is a miracle. Restoring life has to be an even greater one. Mollie Lowery performed many miracles in her lifetime and is considered a saint by those whose lives she touched.

In a statement, Mayor Garcetti pays tribute to Mollie Lowery:

“The City of Los Angeles mourns the death of Mollie Lowery, a fierce advocate for homeless Angelenos who spent her life supporting those living on our sidewalks, and treating them with the dignity, respect, and empathy they so rightly deserve.
Mollie co-founded the Los Angeles Men’s Program (LAMP) in 1985, when thousands of people living with mental illness were released from state-run hospitals and long-term housing programs, and found themselves on the street with nowhere to turn. Through her grace, patience, and stubborn determination, Mollie established LAMP as one of the earliest Housing First programs in Los Angeles. She was a revolutionary, who understood that relapse is a part of recovery, and that loss of housing cannot be wielded as a threat to force sobriety. When she co-founded HousingWorks, she helped establish a national model that works with homeless people for as long as it takes until they are ready for housing. Today, at least 90% of residents placed by HousingWorks remain housed a year later.

The City will continue to honor Mollie’s legacy by sustaining our commitment to ending the homelessness crisis.” Mayor Eric Garcetti

Mayor Eric Garcetti’s New Effort To Combat Homelessness In L.A.

City releases Request for Qualifications and Proposals to develop city-owned Properties to create new Housing for the Homeless

In another critical step in the City’s effort to combat homelessness, Mayor Eric Garcetti invited affordable housing developers to submit proposals to develop City-owned properties for homeless residents.

The City Administrative Officer released a Request for Qualifications and Proposals (RFQ/P) for eight City-owned sites, with multiple parcels, that will either be sold or developed. These sites represent at least $47 million of the City’s plan to invest $138 million towards homeless programs, services, and housing in Los Angeles during this fiscal year.

The development or sale of properties comes as the City prepares to place a general obligation bond on the November ballot, which would raise $1.2 billion in new revenue for housing. Combined with Mayor Garcetti’s proposed affordable housing linkage fee, the City is raising enough funding to nearly double the City’s regular production of affordable housing and more than triple its production of permanent supportive housing for the homeless.

“Too many of our residents need help. It is our responsibility to act now and leverage every resource at our disposal — including our publicly-owned land,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “My office is working with the City Council to aggressively pursue new funding streams for permanent supportive housing, and address homelessness with the urgency that it deserves.”
With this effort the City will create a list of prequalified firms to develop parcels for Angelenos who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The developers will be selected based on their capacity, level of experience, and the strength of their proposed development strategy.

“I am proud of the steps our City is taking to sell its assets to fund permanent supportive housing,” said Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson. “Making an impact on homelessness requires all the resources available to house and provide services for the most vulnerable among us.”

After this RFQ/P process is complete, the City will determine whether each site is better suited for sale or development. The properties will either be developed into affordable housing using the land value as a subsidy, or sold for fair market value to raise revenue for the construction of permanent supportive housing for the homeless.

“Solving homelessness and addressing our affordable housing crisis is a Herculean task, and everyone needs to have skin in the game,” said Councilmember Mike Bonin. “We need to look at every available piece of City-owned land and determine if we can use it for housing, or for revenue to build housing. I’m glad we’re starting this process by looking at vacant and under-used properties in my district.”

Along with this effort, the City is working in partnership with the County of Los Angeles and the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles to more effectively coordinate the funding of services and project-based vouchers for permanent supportive housing projects. The City’s Housing and Community Investment Department (HCIDLA) is also advancing a parallel effort to develop 13 City-owned parcels for affordable and permanent supportive housing.

L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer Takes Action To Reclaim South L.A.

Fighting crime and gangs: Federal and Local Special Abatement Operations Unit has filed 40 actions and obtained 56 injunctions requiring comprehensive improvements to nuisance properties. (Including buildings’ security surveillance)

City Attorney Mike Feuer Takes Action to Take Back South L.A. Community from Notorious Crips Street Gangs; Buildings Sites of Rampant Drug Sales, Gang Activity, Gun Possession

In a sustained effort to rid the city of gang and crime infested properties, City Attorney Mike Feuer today announced that his office has filed lawsuits against the owners of a duplex and fourplex in South Los Angeles. The apartment buildings are alleged strongholds for the Neighborhood Crips street gangs and have been the sites of rampant criminal activity including drug sales and gun possession.

“No neighborhood should have to endure these conditions,” said Feuer. “We’ll continue to target centers of illegal activity like these and take back our communities.”

“When we confirm clear evidence of drug sales and illegal weapons, it is incumbent on the city to take proactive steps to get to the source of the problem” said Councilmember Harris Dawson. “This is a smart approach that will mitigate the immediate problem of drug sales as well as prevent future problems by placing corrective conditions on the property, so that it doesn’t go right back to being the neighborhood drug house.”

The City Attorney has filed an abatement lawsuit against Christopher Darnell Evans and Carl Amos, trustees for the duplex building located at 4406 S. Gramercy Place and within a half-mile of four public schools and two churches. Evans is a documented 46 Neighborhood Crips gang member and has taken over the property following the death of his father in 2012, allegedly encouraging and participating in narcotics sales and gang crime.

Just in the past two months, LAPD officers have conducted four controlled narcotics purchases at the property and made multiple narcotics-related arrests of gang members. Defendant Evans was allegedly involved in selling narcotics during at least two of the purchases. LAPD also made two arrests at the property including one of a gang member for concealing a gun in a vehicle and one of a felon in possession of a stolen gun.

A concurrent lawsuit was filed against Darwin and Ethel Hudson, the owners of a fourplex apartment building located at 5700 South Budlong Avenue. The property is allegedly controlled by the 57 Neighborhood Crips criminal street gang and used as a walk-up site for narcotics sales out of the garage. The property is located within 1,000 feet of a middle school and elementary school.

City Attorney Mike Feuer Takes Action To Reclaim South L.A.

Between September 2015 and May 2016 LAPD conducted 12 controlled narcotics purchases at the property including 10 rock cocaine purchases by informants.

Both lawsuits seek an injunction prohibiting gang and criminal activity on the property, physical and managerial improvements to the property including: an internet-connected video monitoring system; improved lighting; secure gating and fencing; improved tenant screening and lease enforcement procedures; and armed, licensed security guards.

Since July, 2013, City Attorney Feuer’s Federal and Local Special Abatement Operations Unit has filed 40 actions similar to these and obtained 56 injunctions requiring comprehensive physical and managerial improvements to nuisance properties. In this same time period, the office has also successfully secured the closure of five gang/narcotics locations and recovered over $270,000 in costs and fees.

Feuer also recently established an easy-to-use online method through which residents may report properties with gang and/or narcotics activity in their neighborhoods. He’s asking residents to report these properties by calling his office at (213) 978-8340.

Pitbull Received A Star On The Legendary Walk Of Fame

On Friday, July 15th 2016 at 11:30 am Hollywood welcomed a new star (#2,584 in the Recording category). The honor was bestowed on Pitbull by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, President / CEO Leron Gubler, motivational speaker Tony Robbins and performer Luther Campbell toasted Pitbull during the ceremony. The dedication and unveiling of the newest star took place at 6201 Hollywood Boulevard in front of Eastown, in Celia Cruz Square.
Ana Martinez, Producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies said: “The world is fascinated by Pitbull’s story and his remarkable talent. The Hollywood community welcomes him with open arms and applauds him for his work by placing him on one of the world’s most famous landmarks, the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

Pitbull – or Armando Christian Perez, if you will – comes from humble beginnings. Armando was born on January 15th 1981 in Miami, Florida. His parents – immigrants from Cuba – struggled with alcoholism; their marriage fell apart over his father’s drug-dealing when Armando was only 4 years old.

One of Armando’ first memories is reciting poems by the Cuban poet Jose Marti in bars his father took him to. These were his first experiences as a performer.

Raised by his mother, Armando barely graduated high school. His mother kicked him out because – like his father – Armando too started dealing drugs. All along however Armando loved music and listened to all kinds: Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Bass Music, Hip-Hop, Techno, House and Rave. Passionate about music, he started pursuing rapping career straight out of high school.

Pitbull’s Music
His first rapping break was his 2002 album, “Kings of Crunk”. In 2004 Pitbull released his full-length debut, M.I.A.M.I (Money Is A Major Issue) which he followed with the successful El Mariel in 2006 and The Boatlift in 2007.
Following the death of his father, Pitbull released his first Spanish-language album “Armando” in 2010 which significantly expanded his fan base.
Just like his name sake, Pitbull is relentless. 2011 brought “Fresh Out The Oven” and “On The Floor” on Jennifer Lopez album “Love?” and his sixth album titled “Planet Pit”.
In 2012 his seventh album titled “Global Warming” which included singles with Shakira and Christina Aguilera made waves. “Back In Time” was for the hit movie “Men In Black 3: Back In Time”.
In 2013 his album “Global Warming: Meltdown” (which includes much talked about single “Timber”) featured many stars (from Kesha and Kelly Rowland to Inna and Mohombi and Mayer Hawthorne). His eight album, “Globalization” and tracks like “Wild, Wild Love”, “Fireball” and “Time Of Our Lives” were enthusiastically received.

Pitbull’s most acclaimed works to date are “Give Me Everything” (topped the Billboards top 100) and “Hey Baby” which earned the 7th spot. His second album “El Mariel” (# 17 on the Billboard 200 and #2 on the rap chart). “I Know You Want Me” claimed #2 on the Hot 100.

Innovative, relevant and a tour-de-force performer, Pitbull performs to packed venues: his concerts are sold and tours with his name on the marquee attract huge crowds.

It’s said that Pitbull, who made a smooth transition from a t-shirt clad rapper to a dressed-to-kill corporate mover and shaker, is also very successful in his business ventures. He kept his personal life out of the public’s eye and is said to have six children. Pitbull is a protective and caring father who ensures that unlike him, his children have happy childhood and are prepared for life.
With talent and persistence, the former hoodlum earned his way to success but didn’t forget his humble beginnings: Pitbull supports the Sports Leadership and Management Charter Middle / High School in Miami’s Little Havana where he grew up. (The school teaches at risk kids the skills they’ll need to build successful careers and succeed in life.)

Congratulations on the Star, Pitbul! It’s well-deserved.

In 2015, nearly one thousand people were shot in the City of Los Angeles. Unfortunately, the vast majority of shooting victims were young men of color shot by other young men of color. According to Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck, “Far too many of our young men are victims of senseless shootings at the hand of suspects who look just like them. The time for change is here. The time to unify is now! Together we must stop the violence.”

Mayor Eric Garcetti has ordered that Los Angeles City Hall, Department of Water and Power headquarters, and the LAX pylons be lit blue at approximately 8 p.m. on Monday July 18th 2016 in memory of law enforcement officers killed in violent attacks this month in Dallas, Baton Rouge, and St. Joseph, MI.

Interview With The Owner Of Saj Bakery

Saj Bakery Lebanese Cuisine In Granada Hills

The Owner of Saj Bakery speaking with the Editor of Anything L.A. Magazine

Nestled in the Balboa Mission Square in Granada Hills is a nice Mediterranean Bakery with an open kitchen, huge ovens and Shawarma grills. This is the Saj Bakery, serving authentic Lebanese cuisine.

Editor: First and foremost, what does “Saj” stand for? Is it a first name? An abbreviation?

Owner of Saj Bakery: Oh, no! Saj is traditional bread popular in Middle Eastern countries. It is baked on a domed or convex metal griddle, known as Saj. The bread is delicious, thin, and healthy.

Editor: That’s a mystery solved! Would you tell us about your bakery and its menu?

Owner of Saj Bakery: Saj Bakery is family-owned. Everything we serve is made with love like we make it for ourselves. Like my Mom makes it at home. Everything has her touch….

Editor: You mean the dishes you serve are based on your family’s recipes?

Owner of Saj Bakery: Yes!

Editor: I’ve been at Saj Bakery at lunchtime. The place was packed! The long line to cash register represented every ethnicity in America. I was surprised that Lebanese food has such a wide appeal. What accounts for such popularity of your bakery?

Owner of Saj Bakery: Our food is healthy, tasty and has many fans. As for our popularity, believe it or not, it has grown through word of mouth. People may come to us by accident but they return on purpose and yes, they spread the word. Just last night, we’ve had here a family of four: they were telling me that they found out about Saj Bakery from their visiting cousins, who learned about us from their friends….

Editor: I’ve seen Saj Bakery’s glowing customers’ reviews on Yelp.

Owner of Saj Bakery: I have to admit that I’m humbled and proud that our customers are so generous with their praise.

Editor: Would you tell us about the food and the menu?

Owner of Saj Bakery: The food we are serving is Iranian in origin with the addition of the Lebanese flavor. The menu ranges from Shawarma to Falafel and Humus; there are Middle Eastern sweet treats and more!

Saj Bakery Lebanese Cuisine In Granada Hills

Shawarma to die for!

Editor: I’ve seen a lot of fresh vegetables, too…

Owner of Saj Bakery: Our food is 100% natural and we have made a strong commitment to keeping it that way. It is prepared fresh every day at our location by using only the best ingredients. We will never use preservatives, or artificial ingredients.
We also prepare and serve a lot of Manakeesh, traditional Lebanese pies. The pies are served with many different toppings. We put the dough with the topping in a stone oven and serve it hot.

Editor: If I understand you correctly, these are hot sandwiches, right?

Owner of Saj Bakery: Yes and they are delicious! I’d also like to mention that throughout our menu there are choices for both meat-eaters and vegetarians. Our meals are available to eat in and as take-out. We provide catering service, too.

Still, we are constantly surprised by the high demand and the level of traffic we’re getting.

Editor: I think it’s the food and your welcoming staff. One more question, if I may, what is the secret of Saj Bakery’s success?

Owner of Saj Bakery: Good quality food, made with love and care, extreme cleanliness (we have A rating) and the best possible customer service.

Editor: And location, location, location….

Owner of Saj Bakery: Absolutely!

Garry Marshall Passed On

Garry Marshall died on July 19th 2016 at 81 of complications following a stroke.

Marshall is best known for creating 1970s’ hit sitcoms “Happy Days” (starring Henry Winkler), “The Odd Couple” (with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall), “Laverne and Shirley” (with Cindy Williams and Garry’s sister, Penny Marshall) and “Mork and Mindy” (that launched the career of Robin Williams).
He made his mark on the big screen with the unforgettable “Pretty Woman” that launched to stardom Julia Roberts and “The Princess Diaries” that introduced Anne Hathaway to the world.

Garry Marshall was a lot more than the highlights of his work. He was married to his love Barbara, for 53 years; he was a father of three and a devoted brother supportive of his sisters’ show business careers. He loved basketball, enjoyed playing it and was an excellent basketball player.

Of Italian and English descent, Garry Marshall was born in the Bronx. He graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Journalism in Evanston, IL. Right after college, Garry served two years in the Army. He was stationed in South Korea. He’s began his writing career as a reporter for the New York Daily News. About the same time – and on the side, so to speak – he wrote jokes for popular Hollywood comedians… Eventually, this side-gig earned him enough recognition to justify his move to Los Angeles.

Garry’s creative passions had a wide range: as an actor Marshall performed on screen and on stage since the 1960s; he’s penned two memoirs; together with his daughter Kathleen Marshall, he founded the Falcon Theatre in Burbank, California. Garry Marshall was also involved in… opera production and successfully directed operatic shows for Los Angeles Opera and San Antonio Opera.

Marshall’s many creative accomplishments command respect. The way he treated his friends and associates and even newbies in the show business earned him respect of those who knew him well.

Among formal recognitions Garry Marshall received during his prolific career are:

  • American Comedy Award for Lifetime Achievement (1990)
  • Writers Guild of America’s Valentine Davies Award (1995)
  • Marshall was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame (1997)
  • David Susskind Television Lifetime Achievement Award (1998)
  • Lifetime Achievement Award in Television (1998)
  • Garry Marshall was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2004)

Since passion never seizes, we’d like to believe that having made significant contributions to Hollywood entertainment industry, Garry Marshall moved on to entertain new audiences in the afterlife. We’re certain his new audiences will be as delighted with his work as we are.

Three Crimes Against Humanity

Three seemingly unrelated events took place just days apart: the killing of five police officers in Dallas, Texas; the massacre in Nice, France (at least 84 were killed and over 200 wounded) and the killing of three police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. (As we all know by now, ISIS claimed responsibility for the tragedy in France.) The incidents are unrelated and half a world apart yet seem to have some eerie similarities.

07/17/2016 Baton Rouge, Louisiana: by all accounts, the killer Gavin Long (29) seems quite sympathetic. He served in the Marines and earned the rank of a sergeant. He served in Iraq and left the Marines in 2010 with an honorable discharge. His digital footprint indicates that he was passionate about fitness and nutrition and traveled to Africa in search of his roots. He had no criminal record. Long appears to have been frustrated over the two recent deaths of black men at the hands of law enforcement. Following these deaths, he shared on social media that – in his opinion – peaceful protests against police brutality are ineffective and have to be backed up by the use of force.

07/14/2016 Nice, France: the killer, Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel (31) is said to have been bitter over his divorce and recently lost his job. He was a Muslim, but not even his father considered him religious. According to statements from people who knew him, he was a womanizer, drank alcohol, used marijuana and enjoyed pork, all of which is against the strict Muslim standards of behavior. His affiliation with ISIS has not been established and seems unlikely. Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel had a criminal record consisting of minor criminal offenses.

07/07/2016 Dallas, Texas: Apparently devastated by the deaths of several black men at the hands of white police officers, Micah Xavier Johnson (25) aimed at white police officers in Dallas. He killed five and wounded six. Micah Xavier Johnson was an U.S. Army reservist where, according to media reports, he served as a carpentry and masonry specialist until 2015. Johnson was also deployed to Afghanistan where he served for about 9 months. Despite of being accused of sexual harassment by a fellow soldier while in the Army, Johnson’s service ended with an honorable discharge. In the civil life that followed, he worked for a residential health care company, provided care for his younger brother and exercised in a local gym side by side with local law enforcement. Micah Xavier Johnson had no criminal record. The main source of information about his allegiance to black causes seems to stem from his Facebook account.

In all three tragedies, innocent people were killed and wounded. Many lives were brutally taken and many disrupted. Many families are devastated. Great many people suffered, still suffer and many more are traumatized.

Authorities (US and French) were expected to quickly explain the inexplicable. The French call the massacre in Nice, an act of terrorism. To us, the killings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge are murders committed by cold-blooded killers.

The loss of lives in all three cases is real and the tragedies excruciating. Contradicting popular opinion under such circumstances isn’t easy. But am I the only one who can see that all three attackers were lone wolves, unstable individuals who lost their footing in life rather than advocates for causes?

Why would anyone sane murder police officers? Why attack law enforcement officers who were not involved in the killing of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile or Freddie Grey?! Neither Micah Xavier Johnson nor Gavin Long advanced justice, the opposite: they perpetuated more injustice by murdering eight people just like these they wanted to avenge: innocent, healthy, family men…

Why would anyone kill 84 strangers (including children!) and maim over 200 others?! None of the victims caused Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel’s marriage breakup or his unemployment. None of them interfered with his life or practice – in this case, lack thereof – of religion. His actions can’t be explained as an attempted act of revenge, but a hatred of all people.

All people get frustrated and on occasion angry or disheartened. That’s normal. Normal people however know how to deal with their feelings and how to solve problems. We don’t think – leave alone feel compelled to – kill anyone. I don’t know about you, but it never crossed my mind to kill anyone, to kill everybody, or members of a specific group of people. We just don’t think this way. The three killers in question however did: they thought to kill; they planned the killings and carried out their plans.

In my personal need to make sense of events that don’t and none the three events I mentioned above does, I can see only three possibilities:
1/ Each of the killers suffered from some mental or emotional issues.
2/ Each wanted to commit a suicide by a cop.
3/ Each sought instant notoriety.

I wholeheartedly condemn all three acts of mass murder. BUT: normal people don’t commit murders. Are we dealing with terrorism and / or murderers OR the society’s failure to prevent, identify, treat and perhaps even isolate persons with mental / emotional problems?…

Obviously, these are only one person’s questions, I welcome your opinions.

UPDATE: #4! On July 22nd 2016 a German-born (with a German and Iranian citizenship) 18 year old, Ali Sonboly, killed nine people and eventually committed suicide in Munich, Germany. German officials didn’t describe the mass killings as an “act of terrorism”.
In spite of terror-related literature found at the killer’s home, authorities concluded that the massacre was in revenge for bullying Sonboly suffered in school at the hands of “Turkish and Arab” teens (seven of the victims were teenagers).
German officials see the attack as a violent outburst of a depressed loner who was receiving psychiatric treatment, not a politically-motivated attack on Germany.

Amy Schumer: Non-Consensual Sex

Amy Schumer

In a recent Marie Claire interview the popular comedienne shared that her first sexual experience wasn’t consensual. Many media outlets and bloggers ran with the story, referring to Amy’s experience as “rape”.

Is every instance of non-consensual sex, rape? Who has the authority to slap a label on another person’s experience?

As a public figure, Amy gives interviews. It is up to her what aspects of her personal life she chooses to share with media and the public at large and how. She spoke of non- consensual sex, not of rape.

Anything L.A. Magazine likes Amy Schumer, the artist. We see her as talented, funny, pretty and entertaining.

Amy Schumer became a household name as a hard-hitting, over-sharing stand-up comedienne appearing on Comedy Central and Last Comic Standing. Since then she’s proven her talent most notably on “Inside Amy Schumer” and “Trainwreck”. She is an accomplished writer, actress, and producer. Right now Amy is getting ready for a 50+ city world tour. Her memoir will make its debut next month. The woman isn’t wasting time!

Long story short, there are many reasons to like her. We are among Amy’s fans. There is nothing wrong with that. Re-interpreting another person’s experience by either a media outlet or a fan is. Using other person’s bad experience to explore the topic – or our own opinion on the subject – may not be a great idea, either.

Amy Schumer is an adult, independent and intelligent woman. To her it was “non-consensual sex”. If every instance of non-consensual sex is rape to you, you are entitled to your opinion. With that said, I don’t believe that anyone but Amy Schumer herself has the right to define her own experiences. She described it as unfortunate, unpleasant and stressful. She didn’t cry rape. She didn’t have the perpetrator prosecuted. She doesn’t identify herself as a rape victim or a rape survivor. Why would anyone want to bully her into victimhood?

Not every instance of non-consensual sex is rape. Not every person subjected to non-consensual sex is – or identifies herself as – a rape victim. Defining someone as a rape victim – without the person’s consent, yet another violation of personhood – is disempowering and perpetuates the effects of an already bad experience.

The fact that Amy Schumer is a public figure shouldn’t deprive her of the right to live and interpret her life on her own terms. I don’t know who her first sex partner was and I certainly don’t think of him well. But it’s obvious to me which one of the participants of the questionable sex act overcame its distaste with her dignity intact. I for one wouldn’t try to reframe Amy’s unfortunate sexual encounter as anything that would take away from her pride or power.

Volunteer For Better Los Angeles

There are many ways to make a difference as a volunteer in Los Angeles area. It may surprise you that one of the places that could benefit from volunteer help is City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.

Our very own Department of Recreation and Parks is involved in an enormous amount of interesting projects that call for volunteer participation. Enrolling into the volunteer program of City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks would definitely contribute to Los Angeles and benefit our community. Chances are, volunteering for such an important cause (Los Angeles!) would be gratifying to YOU as well!

Legendary rocker Mick Jagger (72) and his 27 year old love, Melanie Hamrick, a member of the American Ballet Theatre company, are expecting! By the time the baby arrives, Mick will be 73.

Rock’n’roll’s great, Mick Jagger is best known as the lead singer of Rolling Stones and for such hits as “Get Off My Cloud” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” as well as hit albums “Beggars Banquet” and “Exile On Main Street”.
Mick Jagger is also an accomplished songwriter and solo artist (1985 “She’s The Boss”, 1993 “Wandering Spirit” and 2001 “Goddess In The Doorway”).
He is a sought after music collaborator who has worked with Lenny Kravitz, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Living Colour, Carly Simon, The Who’s Pete Townshend and others. Jagger sung duets with such music icons as David Bowie, The Jacksons, Tina Turner, and Bono.

As much as his artistic achievements are common knowledge, it is much less known that Mick Jaggers’s business acumen helped Rolling Stones achieve large degree of independence from the music industry. The creation of Rolling Stones’ own record label and pioneering arena and stadium concerts greatly contributed to the group’s and Mick’s financial success.

Mick Jagger To Become A Dad Again At 73

Mick Jagger

The Rolling Stone is already a father of seven: Mick Jagger has four daughters and three sons ranging in age from 17 to 45 by several different women. (These are the children we know of, it wouldn’t be shocking if there were other Mick’s kids out there. After all, the famous lover is reported to have been with over 4,000 girls….)

No wedding plans accompanied the recent pregnancy announcement. It isn’t known at this time whether Mick Jagger and Melanie Hamrick plan to raise the baby together. Just as well, Mick isn’t known for being a great long-term mate or spouse but is – by all accounts – a devoted father.

Hugo's Restaurant In Studio City

Hugo’s Restaurant In Studio City (entrance from the parking)

Interview with Tom Kaplan, CEO of Hugo’s Restaurant (Part 3)

The Secret of Hugo’s Restaurant Success
(Hint: passion, teamwork and creativity are hallmarks of success)

Editor: I’d be amiss if I didn’t ask you: what’s the secret of success?

Tom Kaplan: Teamwork! Rich and Leslie, my wife and myself have been working together since 1990. We had a coffeehouse together in Hollywood. It worked so well, we decided to become partners in Hugo’s after my father retired. Shortly after that we decided that if we were to expand we needed a CFO and Bill (Kohne) is a genius. We are all very different business people; each of us brings different talents to the table. Each flourishes in their own area. We all listen to and support each other.

Editor: How did you manage to assemble such a harmonious team?

Tom Kaplan: It was a happy accident. We are kindred spirits. We all work well together. We believe in servant leadership. The owners are here to support the general managers and the chefs, the chefs are here to support the people who work for them, and so on, it starts from the top.

Editor: So all the teams work together like an orchestra.

Tom Kaplan: Yes, they do. My dad’s philosophy is that love is the true power. He also insisted on constant innovation.

Editor: Well, it’s not easy to remain innovative and relevant for so many years and yet, you succeeded. Clearly, his philosophy works!
It seems that you inherited many of your father’s best qualities. What a trip from “Eastern White Veal” to feeding people with varying dietary needs, sorghum and water conservation…

The world changed and Hugo’s Restaurant not only kept up, but pioneered many changes in the culinary arts and the restaurant industry. I still remember Hugo’s coffee (you HAVE TO try it: it tastes great and it works, if you know what I mean!). I never said thank you for the coffee. So, thanks for the coffee and thank you for caring. Hugo’s Restaurant has earned its good reputation by caring about our health, about their staff and yes, the environment. The legacy of Terry Kaplan, the founder of Hugo’s Restaurant, not only continues but has grown over time. Its core values of Love Of People, Food and Environment are timeless. Hugo’s Restaurant continues to be a magnet for local foodies’ and is still the leader in innovative and wholesome restaurant meals, a staying power well-earned, indeed!
