Blanket, Toy and School Supplies Drive and Mini-Powwow December 6 2014

December Gift Drive And Mini-Powwow In Simi Valley

Photo by Corina Roberts, Founder of Redbird

Please come to Blanket, Toy and School Supplies Drive and Mini-Powwow from 11 AM to 3:30 PM at the Simi Valley Town Center Mall Community Room. The return of the drums Blue Star and Crooked Hat is anticipated; there will be dancing and singing in a family style atmosphere and this year Ken Marchionno, world class photojournalist who rides every year with the Lakota people on the Oomaka Tokatakiya (Future Generations Ride which began as the Bigfoot Memorial Ride to wipe the tears of seven generations from the massacre at Wounded Knee) will be there as well.

The December issue of Cowboys and Indians magazine will feature an article about the ride, written by Corina Roberts and illustrated by Ken and the youth who participate in this journey. The blanket, toy and school supplies drive will benefit the Pine Ridge reservation (as well as other reservations via a distribution partner, Walking Shield). Needed are new, lightweight, warm and washable blankets which will be shipped directly to a known and respected family on the reservation. They in turn distribute these (along with small to medium sized stuffed toys snuggled into the blankets as space allows) as gifts, not charity, and they make sure to distribute them to those who need them.

The Goodman Theatre’s world premiere production of Rebecca Gilman’s “Luna Gale,” directed by Robert Falls, opens Tuesday, December 2 at 8 p.m. at the Center Theatre Group / Kirk Douglas Theatre. The production continues through December 21st 2014.

The cast, who originated their roles in Chicago, includes Jordan Baker, Reyna de Courcy, Melissa DuPrey, Mary Beth Fisher, Erik Hellman, Colin Sphar and Richard Thieriot.

A veteran social worker, Caroline, thinks she has a typical case on her hands when she meets Peter and Karlie, two teenage drug addicts accused of neglecting their baby, Luna Gale. But when Caroline places their daughter in the care of Karlie’s very religious mother, she sparks a family conflict that exposes a shadowy past and forces her to make a risky decision with potentially life-altering consequences.

Set design for “Luna Gale” is by Todd Rosenthal, costumes by Kaye Voce, lighting by Robert Wierzel and original music and sound design by Richard Woodbury. The production stage manager is Kirsten Parker.

Kour Pour Solo Exhibition At Depart Foundation In Los Angeles
JANUARY 31-MARCH 7, 2015

Depart Foundation will present Kour Pour’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, curated by Nicola Ricciardi.

Opening concurrently with Art Los Angeles Contemporary 2015, the exhibition by British-Iranian, Los Angeles-based Pour will include new paintings and related installation works that continue the artist’s recent carpet painting series. In the first iteration of this series the carpet imagery was directly appropriated from exhibition and auction catalogs. The paintings in this show are composed in Photoshop using imagery found online and from clip art CD-ROMs to create original carpet designs in which iconic motifs and symbols from different time periods and regions of the world are juxtaposed to flatten time, space, and location.

Pour’s paintings incorporate months of painstaking work and include techniques that culminate in a complex, yet delicately executed surface. Each piece begins by etching the rug’s warp and weft into the under-painting using a broomstick, effectively mimicking a woven texture. After transferring a silkscreen print of the design over the textured surface, the artist begins the meticulous process of hand painting each figure and pattern. To finish off the work an electrical sander is used to erase areas of the painting’s surface, creating a fictional history that resembles the “aging” process undertaken by forgers of antiquities.

Depart Foundation is pleased to be a cultural partner of Art Los Angeles Contemporary 2015. A press release announcing further exhibition details is forthcoming.

Kour Pour (b. 1987) is a British born, part-Iranian artist. He graduated from Otis College of Art and Design and lives and works in Los Angeles. Pour’s work involves the meticulous, detailed and elaborate large-scale painting of Persian rugs which take several months to complete, incorporating many techniques including an under-painting using a broomstick, silkscreen printing, sanding and hand painting. His works have been included in group exhibitions at Roberts & Tilton and Steve Turner Gallery in Los Angeles. Pour’s first solo exhibition was presented at UNT/TLED Gallery, New York in 2014 and he was the youngest artist featured in the 2014 Artists to Watch exhibition in Miami. In October 2014, Pour’s exhibition Ozymandias was presented at Ellis King, Dublin.

Nicola Ricciardi (b. 1985) is an art critic and curator. He received a M.A. from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) in New York in 2014 and he currently lives in Milan, Italy. He contributes regularly for several art magazines and he is Editor-in-chief at “Carnet de miart”, the official digital publication of Milan’s International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair. In April 2015 Nicola will become Director at Stackwood’s, a soon to be opened residency program in Milan dedicated to art and literary criticism whose goal is to promote slower forms of knowledge, production and circulation.

Depart Foundation is an emerging arts organization predicated on the discussion, exhibition and production of art and is dedicated to the development and support of contemporary artists whose work and careers are departing from their previous endeavors or predecessors.

Since its founding in 2008, Depart Foundation has served as a catalyst for the Italian art and cultural community, strengthening the dialogue between Italy and the international art world. Like multiple outposts in Europe and U.S., Depart Foundation has actively encouraged artistic production through sponsorship of young and established artists and the provision of spaces and resources conducive to the research, production and exhibition of new work and to the presentation of educational and public programs.

Some of the most interesting and dynamic artists of our time, from around the world, have been presented for the first time in Rome by Depart Foundation. They include Cory Arcangel, Joe Bradley, Nate Lowman, Ryan McGinley, Tauba Auerbach, Darren Bader, Louis Eisner, Roe Ethridge, Sam Falls, Mark Flood, Elias Hansen, Brendan Lynch, Oscar Murillo, Sarah Braman, Seth Price, Jon Rafman, Stephen G. Rhodes, Amanda Ross-Ho, Sterling Ruby, Lucien Smith, Valerie Snobeck, Frances Stark, Oscar Tuazon, Cao Fei, Mario Garcia Torres and many others.

The Depart Foundation has supported the Italian art community, presented local artists in cities as far as New York and Los Angeles and collaborated with important art institutions in Italy and beyond including, among others, the Macro and MAXXI museums in Rome, the American Academy in Rome, the Serpentine Gallery in London and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles.

Flappers Comedy Club Announces Pay-What-You-Can Thanksgiving Weekend

Comedy At YOUR Budget at Flappers Comedy Club

Need a good laugh at Thanksgiving? It’s on Flappers Comedy Club! Enjoy eight special pay-what-you-can performances by top comedians at Downtown Burbank and Claremont locations, Friday and Saturday, November 28th and 29th. Spirit lifting comedy will be delivered by headliners Jackie Kashian (Last Comic Standing, Bob & Tom, Comedy Central 1/2 Hour) in Downtown Burbank on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 P.M. and 10:00 P.M., and Al Lubel (Late Show with David Letterman) at the Claremont location on Friday 8:00 P.M. and 10:00 P.M., and Saturday at 7:00 P.M. and 9:30 P.M. For pay-what-you-can tickets at both locations, please call 818-845-9721.

Jackie Kashian (Friday and Saturday, November 28 and 29 in Burbank) is like listening to a really racy episode of All Things Considered. She is a national touring comedian with a new hour standup special “This Will Make an Excellent Horcrux.” She recently made her late night comedy debut on the Conan O’Brien show, has her own half hour special on Comedy Central, was a semi-finalist on Last Comic Standing and has recorded This American Life with Ira Glass for National Public Radio. She has a weekly Podcast where she interviews people about their obsessions. Kashian enjoys video games, go-carts, hackysack, horseback riding and performing standup on Thanksgiving weekends. Her show at Flappers Comedy Club in Downtown Burbank also stars Host/Emcee Dan Telfer (The Onion, Second City, Just For Laughs Montreal), and Erin Foley (Comedy Central Special, Chelsea Lately, Conan).

Al Lubel (Friday and Saturday, November 28 and 29 in Claremont) became a lawyer to please his mother and a comedian to please himself (which did not please his mother). After graduating from law school in Florida, Lubel moved to Los Angeles, passed the California Bar Exam on his first try, and immediately began the practice of standup comedy. Lawyer by day and comedian by night, he was doing justice to neither. At comedy clubs, the crowds would stare, in court, the juries would laugh. Lubel gradually began getting work on the road, soon becoming a full-time comic. So, he quit the law. This was a good decision, because within a year he won the $100,000 Grand Prize for comedy on Star Search. Doing the The Tonight Show was a childhood fantasy, so when Lubel heard that Johnny Carson was retiring, he auditioned and became one of the last comics to appear on the show. More recently, he made his fifth appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. His show at Flappers Comedy Club in Claremont also stars Host/Emcee Charlene Mae (Baby Daddy, Rules of Engagement season 5, Mike and Molly) and Mike Repik (50 Autopsies).

December Screenings At The Academy In Los Angeles

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rounds out the year with new screenings in the series The Perfect Match: Hollywood Costume Collaborations, in conjunction with the landmark Hollywood Costume exhibition now on view, and introduces A New Career in a New Town: Weimar Directors in Berlin and Hollywood, a screening series of early German cinema paired with equally classic Hollywood films.

The Perfect Match: Hollywood Costume Collaborations
The Academy spotlights three partnerships from Hollywood’s Golden Age in The Perfect Match: Hollywood Costume Collaborations during the month of December. Beginning with Clare West, one of the earliest Hollywood costume designers, and her collaborations with director Cecil B. DeMille on “The Golden Bed” and “Male and Female,” the series goes on to examine the work of Milo Anderson and Michael Curtiz on “The Adventures of Robin Hood” and “Mildred Pierce,” and two of the many collaborations between eight-time Oscar®-winner Edith Head and Alfred Hitchcock, “Notorious” and “Vertigo.”

A New Career in a New Town: Weimar Directors in Berlin and Hollywood
In conjunction with the ongoing exhibition Haunted Screens: German Cinema in the 1920s, a partnership between the Academy and LACMA, this new screening series focuses on the early films of German filmmakers F.W. Murnau, Max Ophüls and Ernst Lubitsch. The double-feature presentations juxtapose the directors’ films from the 1920s and ’30s with those they made after they emigrated to America.

The Riotous Farce Features Frances Barber, Sarah Manton, Angus McEwan, Rod McLachlan, Charles Shaughnessy and Paxton Whitehead

“What The Butler Saw” Opens At Mark Taper Forum This Sunday

L-R: Angus McEwan, Frances Barber and Charles Shaughnessy in Joe Orton’s “What the Butler Saw” at the Center Theatre Group/Mark Taper Forum. Directed by John Tillinger, “What the Butler Saw” plays November 12 through December 21, 2014. Opening is November 23. Photo by Craig Schwartz

Award-winning British playwright Joe Orton’s riotous farce “What the Butler Saw” opens Sunday, November 23, 2014, at 7 p.m. at the Center Theatre Group / Mark Taper Forum. “What the Butler Saw” is currently in previews, and performances continue through December 21.

The acclaimed cast includes Frances Barber (Ophelia in “Hamlet” and Marguerite in “Camille” at Royal Shakespeare Company), Sarah Manton (Broadway’s “One Man, Two Guvnors”), Angus McEwan (“The Duchess”), Rod McLachlan (Broadway’s “Holiday,” “The Government Inspector” and “Our Town”), Charles Shaughnessy (best known for CBS’ “The Nanny”) and Paxton Whitehead (Broadway’s “Importance of Being Earnest,” “My Fair Lady” and “Noises Off”).

“What the Butler Saw” is directed by farce veteran and Orton expert John Tillinger, who previously directed the Orton plays “Loot” and “Entertaining Mr. Sloane” in repertory at the Taper (1987). Set design is by James Noone, costume design is by Laurie Churba Kohn, lighting design is by Ken Billington and John McKernon, sound design is by John Gromada, wigs and hair are by Carol F. Doran, casting is by Mark B. Simon, CSA, and the production stage manager is David S. Franklin.

Set in the consulting room of a private psychiatric clinic, the action begins when the very proper Dr. Prentice (played by Shaughnessy) is interrupted by his wife (Barber) just as he is about to seduce a beautiful young woman who is applying for a job as a secretary (Manton). As his botched efforts to conceal his actions spiral outrageously out of control, Orton ferociously skewers psychiatry, religion, marriage, morality, government and definitions of gender.
